In 1924, the city of Fort Myers purchased 670 acres of land south of the city with the intention of developing it into a municipal golf course. However, the golf course never came to fruition and it was instead develpoed into the area's first airport.
The airport commenced operation in 1926 with sod runways. Daily air mail service then began to Fort Myers. In its early days, the airport was nicknamed Palmetto Field for the large amount of palmetto brush growing in and around the airport.[1][2]
Passenger service began at the airport in 1937 when National Airlines commenced regular flights. However, those were soon discontinued due to the poor landing conditions with unpaved runways.Cite error: A <ref>

Southwest Airlines began service to RSW on October 2, 2005, less than a month after the opening of the current terminal.[4] Southwest merged with AirTran Airways in 2014, making Southwest one of the largest carriers at RSW.[citation needed]
From 2013 to 2018, Silver Airways operated service from RSW to Orlando and Key West on Saab 340 turboprop aircraft. They also briefly operated flights to Nassau in the mid-2010s, the only service to ever operate from RSW to the Bahamas.[5] Silver Airways planned to resume flights to Key West in early 2024, but cancelled the planned service before it began.[6] As of mid-2024, there is no commercial intra-state service at RSW.[citation needed]
Avelo Airlines began service in 202?. Avelo planned to open an operating base at RSW in late 2022, but reversed the decision after the landfall of Hurricane Ian on September 28, 2022 which led to a decrease in demand for travel.
