Victor Richel

Victor M. Richel is an American banking executive and philanthropist. Victor was the former Vice Chairman of the Board of Independence Community Bank Corp. Victor is currently the Chairman of Trinitas Regional Medical Center and the Chairman of the Board of Union Country College. After making his mark in banking and utilities, he became involved at the board level in local organizations including Trinitas Regional Medical Center and Union County College. He and his wife Andrea head the Cranford-based Richel Family Foundation

Education A Villanova University graduate, Mr. Richel also furthered his education at Columbia University and the Harvard Business School to attend marketing and executive development programs.

]Work History Mr. Richel was Vice Chairman of the Board of Independence Community Bank Corp, prior to its sale to Sovereign Bank in June of 2006. He previously served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Statewide Savings Bank. Mr. Richel became Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Statewide Financial Corp. upon its formation as the holding company for the Bank. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bank since l985 and its predecessor institutions since l974. [2] Mr. Richel was appointed to the Banking Advisory Board of the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance in 1996 after being nominated by Governor Christine Todd Whitman. He has also served on the board of Thrift Institutions Community Investment Corporation of New Jersey (TICIC), and the Board of the New Jersey Savings League. Mr. Richel is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Dominion Partners, LLC, an investment and consulting firm through which he provides consultation to banks and companies throughout the world. He also serves as Chairman of Westminster Properties, LLC, a real estate development company, licensed NJ new home builder, and property management company. [2]

Civic Activity Mr. Richel has served numerous civic roles and is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Trinitas Regional Medical Center as well as its parent organization, Trinitas Health. He also serves since 1995 as Chairman of Union County College and is a member of the Board of Governors at the College, as well as Chairman and President of the Friends of the Child Advocacy Center of Union County. He is Treasurer and a Trustee of Elizabethtown Healthcare Foundation, Independence Community Foundation, as well as the Two Hundred Club of Union County and of Union County Crime Stoppers. Formerly, Mr. Richel served as a Trustee of the Garden State Cancer Center, Pace University’s Lubin School of Business, and St. Peter’s College Board of Regents. [2]

Key Role in the Growth of Trinitas Regional Medical Center Currently the Chairman of Trinitas, Mr. Richel has the distinction of being the only person to serve on the Boards of the three Elizabeth hospitals, and he was pivotal in the progression of those hospitals into the current Trinitas Regional Medical Center. [3] His commitment to healthcare in Elizabeth goes back nearly 30 years when he became a member of the Board of Alexian Brothers Hospital. After serving for only four years he was elected Chairman, and soon thereafter it was learned that the Alexian Order in Chicago was divesting the Elizabeth hospital and other healthcare facilities in New Jersey and California. Elizabeth General Medical Center entered into negotiations with The Alexian Brothers of Elizabeth to acquire the hospital in 1990. He was key to these negotiations. [4] Following the acquisition, Mr. Richel joined the Board of Trustees of Elizabeth General Medical Center, where he was very active and served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. In the late 1990’s, he was again central to the discussions that led to the merger of Elizabeth General and St. Elizabeth Hospital – a merger that created Trinitas Regional Medical Center in January, 2000. [4] He explained, “With the Trinitas merger, both Elizabeth General and Saint Elizabeth Hospital brought unique strengths. Both were good working hospitals, and together they created something even stronger and more viable that will serve Central and Northern New Jersey for many years to come. [4] He notes that Trinitas today, “…carries on the strengths, spirit and compassion of all three hospitals. Trinitas offers ten Centers of Excellence, which are a collection of the strong programs forged by these hospitals.” [4]

Union County College Mr. Richel also serves as Chairman of the Board of Union County College, a post he has held for the last 15 years. During that time, Union County College has developed into one of the nation’s leading community colleges. He explained, “We have a number of centers of excellence at the College, including an English as a Second Language (ESL) program that is the largest in New Jersey and is also one of the largest and most successful in the country.” He added that a major element of the College is the highly successful cooperative program it operates with Trinitas. “The Cooperative Nursing Program is one of the best parts of the College, and is a very important part of the mission of both the College and Trinitas Regional Medical Center. [4] With an enrollment nearing 2,000 students, the Trinitas School of Nursing is one of the largest nursing schools in the United States – and still growing. The School now occupies an entire floor of Union County College’s new Elizabeth I. Kellogg education building located on West Jersey Street in Elizabeth. [4]

[edit]Richel Family Foundation The Richel Family Foundation is guided by the desire to help all people throughout Union County and New Jersey to lead healthy and productive lives. To that end, the Foundation supports health care, education and a number of social service agencies that are dedicated to helping people live better lives. Andrea and Vic Richel are the founding members of the Foundation. Their children and spouses, Sue and Ed Marchelitis, John and Kim Richel and Dave and Heather Richel, all serve as trustees. [5]

[edit]Awards Mr. Richel received numerous awards and special recognition for his long and effective civic activity. He received the Union County Association for Retarded Citizens Humanitarian Award, the Alexian Brothers New Jersey Man of the Year Award, the Union County Human Relations Commission Special Achievement Award, the Christopher Columbus Humanitarian of 2003 Award and was honored for “Making a Difference” by the Garden State Cancer Center in 2003. He received the 2005 Humanitarian Award by the Union County Educational Services Foundation, and was honored by Union County College in 2005 for outstanding service. In recognition of this service, the College re-dedicated its Student Commons Building in his name. Additionally, the College and Trinitas dedicated the floor at the Kellogg campus occupied by the Trinitas School of Nursing in both his and Andrea’s names. [4] Mr. Richel was named an Alumnus of Distinction by the Elizabeth Education Foundation in 1997, and he is also a recipient of the 1999 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Recently, Vic and Andrea Richel were presented with the Caritas Award by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. The Caritas Award is given to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated high standards of Christian social action and who commit themselves to service in the spirit of the Sisters of Charity. We have lived in Union County and NJ all of our lives and we believe that we have a responsibility to volunteer our time and treasure to help others. For us, it’s a true labor of love.” [4]
