Diogenes Stoudymire was born on June 1, 1989, in New York City. He moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his grandmother until the age of 6. She gave him the nickname "Dee". He later returned to Harlem to live with his mother in Frederick Samuels, a public housing tenement.

During his childhood, he was featured in several school plays and musicals for his acting, dancing and singing abilities. However, he chose to focus on basketball and chess [6].

When he turned 16, he began acting[1] and rapping while attending Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. This high school is also home to other notable alumni such as Ma$e[7], Cam'ron[7], Sanaa Lathan[8] and Mehki Phifer [9]. During his high school years he was given the nickname "Dee Dollar$" [1], which he briefly used as his stage name before changing it to "Tokyo Dee".

He went on to further develop his talents by performing in local rap cyphers and talent shows when he was admitted to Saint Johns University.
