History
[edit]Gold mining in Ontario began in 1866 at the Madoc mine with the discovery of gold in a copper vein. This discovery lead to a gold rush occurring with upwards of 4000 prospectors arriving in the region the following year. [1] In 1906 another small gold rush formed following the news of a discovery in North Bay. This was followed by one of the largest gold rushes in Ontario starting in 1909 known as the Porcupine Gold Rush. In 1910 significant numbers of people began prospecting for gold numbering between 50-100 people daily.[2]
