North American Culture Show or NACS first began in 2012. It is a competition between universities and colleges in Ontario, a platform to showcase talent in four different categories of dance. The categories are Bhangra, Hip-hop, Classical, and bollywood.[1]
Description
[edit]The participating universities and associated colleges include Brock-Niagara, Guelph-Humber, McMaster-Mohawk, Ottawa-Carleton, Queen’s university, Ryerson-George Brown, UOIT-DC, Waterloo-Laurier, and York-Seneca.[2] Each school holds auditions for dancers who will represent their school and compete at the North American Culture Show. The first display of talent is at the formal that takes place in the fall semester where each school performs a teaser on what is to be expected on competition day. The actual North American Culture Show takes place in the winter semester usually in March or April where each school shows their dance performances. The performances consist of each of the required dance categories coming together with a theme, finale, and lots of spirit.[3]
History
[edit]Prior to 2012, NACS was known as South Asian Alliance (SAA) Culture Show that had the intention of reducing cancer risk by promoting healthy eating and exercise.[4] Even when it was known as SAA, the students worked incredibly hard to prepare their performances that included dance styles matching modern Bollywood films that required choreography, practice, and enthusiasm.[5]
NACS Weekend Events

[edit]There is a team mixer on the first night which consists of dancers and executives from every school coming together to mingle and have dinner as well as put forward one dancer from each category to perform.[6]
Saturday
[edit]Second day is the actual North American Culture Show where all teams perform in front of more than a thousand people in the audience, seats are split into 10 sections so each school may sit together to cheer in harmony. Tickets have to be purchased for this event. The audience receives t-shirts for their school as well as lights and/or noise making items to show their support. After every teams performance, the winners are announced and given a trophy. Prizes are given for top bhangra, fusion, classical, and bollywood performances as well as best artistic design, best finale, best spirit, and NACS people’s choice award. Second night, there is an after party for dancers, executives, and those who have bought tickets. There is a DJ and it is a party atmosphere for all individuals to dance and enjoy their last night of the NACS weekend. [7]
Sunday
[edit]Third day morning is a breakfast goodbye for team members and executives where they have a last chance to mingle and say goodbye as well as share stories. NACS 2014 breakfast awards have been posted where awards were given for best theme, best teaser, best mix, best costumes, best gear, best dancer, most organized, mixer champions, the NACS big thing, and sportsmanship award.[8]
