Samantha McMahon Murray (born Samantha Louise McMahon; May 30, 1980), known professionally as Trish Stratus, is an American businesswoman and professional wrestling personality. She is the Chief Media and Digital Officer of WWE and sporadically serves as a member of the on-screen roster.

A wrestling promoter as a member of the McMahon family, she has worked for WWE since she was a young girl. She is the great-granddaughter of Roderick "Jess" McMahon, granddaughter of Vincent J. McMahon, daughter of WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon and retired WWE CEO/current Administrator of the Small Business Administration Linda McMahon, the younger sister of Shane McMahon and Stephanie Levesque, and sister-in-law of WWE executive/wrestler Paul "Triple H" Levesque.

Murray began appearing regularly on-air for WWE (then WWF) in November 1999 under the name Tori. She initially debuted in a storyline with her family, Kane and DX. By 2001, she had transitioned to a wrestling role working away from her family, becoming a 7-time WWE Women's Champion, one-time WWE Hardcore Champion, three-time WWE Babe Of The Year and WWE Diva Of The Decade before her retirement from in-ring competition in October 2006.

Following her retirement, she began sporadically appearing on WWE television, mainly in storylines involving her family. In 2018, she returned to the ring at WWE Royal Rumble and the first-ever all-women's pay per view event in WWE history. In 2013, she became the second McMahon and youngest ever inductee into the WWE Hall Of Fame.

Business Career

World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment/WWE

Murray entered the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) as a small child, mainly modelling merchandise in television commercials and magazine adverts. In September 1996, she entered the family business full-time after being removed from education due to poor attendance and grades. In a 2006 interview, Murray remarked on her lack of education saying "I knew very early on that school wasn't for me. I loved, I still love, our business and it is all I wanted to do. I didn't want to waste time, as I was not academic in the slightest. I knew that Vince could teach me so much more than a teacher ever, ever could."

After a year working as an unpaid intern, Murray decided to join the licensing department which was responsible for selling television and pay-per-view rights around the world. In September 2000, the Director of Licensing announced her departure to the company and recommended McMahon succeed her due to her work in the department. Whilst Vince McMahon initially disagreed with the decision, he relented and Murray took over the role in January 2001. In January 2003, Murray was promoted within the department to become the Executive Vice President, Distribution and Live Events.

In October 2004, Murray announced her intention to leave the company to begin a new venture. She officially left the company on December 31st 2004.

YouTube

In January 2005, Murray moved to Los Angeles to work on her new venture with partners Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. The new company was officially founded as YouTube in February 2005 when Murray was named as the company's CEO.

In October 2006, Murray and Chen sold YouTube to Google Inc. for $1.65 billion. It was reported in the Wall Street Journal that Murray's share was $345.6M at Google's February 7, 2007 closing stock price of $470.01. She received 735,319 Google shares directly whilst YouTube's other two co-founders, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, received 625,366 shares and 137,443 shares, respectively valued at $326.2M and $64.6M.

McMahon remained as CEO of YouTube until October 2010 when she stepped down but would remain with the company in an advisory role but this role ended in 2014.

Return to WWE

In January 2011, Murray returned to WWE as Executive Vice President, Distribution, returning to her original role. In addition to her distribution role, Murray had an increased role in television writing and production alongside being tasked with revamping the company's talent developmental system alongside Paul Levesque.

On December 4th 2013, WWE announced the promotion of McMahon to Chief Network and Distribution Officer, where she will take over the day-to-day running of the WWE Network whilst continuing her current role of selling television rights around the world. In addition to her role, McMahon officially returned to the talent relations department and became the Head Writer of WWE's developmental company NXT. She joined the board of WWE in March 2014.

World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment/WWE (2001-Present)

The Alliance (2001)

Murray made her WWF television debut on July 9, 2001 when she was introduced by Shane McMahon as Samantha McMahon, the illegitimate child of Vince McMahon and the new owner of the ECW brand. The siblings, along with sister Stephanie, joined forces under the brand of The Alliance, a group consisting of World Championship Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling with the idea of putting their father's WWF out of business.

In late October, both sides agreed to end things once and for all. A "Winner Take All" classic Survivor Series elimination tag team match was set for the Survivor Series pay-per-view, with the losing company going out of business forever. In addition, two title unification matches were signed, as the WCW World Tag Team Championship and the WWF Tag Team Championship were to be unified in a match between The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz, while Edge and Test would meet in a match to unify Edge's WCW United States Championship with Test's WWF Intercontinental Championship. Further, 20 WWF and Alliance members would square off in what was called the "Immunity Battle Royal", with the winner of the match keeping his job for one year regardless of whether his side won or not.

In the end, Team WWF (The Rock, Chris Jericho, The Undertaker, Kane, and Big Show) defeated Team Alliance (Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, and Shane McMahon) when Angle double-crossed The Alliance by turning on Austin while he was fighting The Rock during the closing stages of the match. The Rock then pinned Austin, thus putting The Alliance out of business. The following night, McMahon was fired from the WWF along with Shane and Stephanie.

Managing Randy Orton and Evolution (2002-04)

McMahon returned to WWE on April 25, 2002 as the manager of debuting superstar Randy Orton, playing a fan favourite for the first time. The couple were drafted to the Raw brand in September 2002 but were sidelined when Orton suffered a shoulder injury leaving him sidelines for months. While recovering, Orton and McMahon still appeared on Raw in his own Randy News Network (RNN) segment, a weekly vignette featuring him talking about his condition. The show interrupted other segments of Raw programming, which caused the pair to slowly transition himself into narcissistic and self-centered villains.

After the injury had healed, Orton joined the Evolution stable which consisted of Ric Flair, Triple H and fellow newcomer, Batista with McMahon serving as manager to all four. The group was pushed on Raw from 2003 to 2004, with the height of their dominance occurring after Armageddon in 2003 when all of the men's titles on Raw were held by the members of Evolution. In 2003, McMahon spent most of her time helping Triple H overcome challenges for the World Heavyweight Championship. In July 2004, McMahon accidentally cost Orton the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a match against Edge. Following the match, McMahon attempted to apologize to Orton but received an RKO and was written off television.

Sporadic Appearances (2007-11)

On June 11th 2007, WWE aired a segment at the end of Raw that featured Vince McMahon entering a limousine moments before it exploded. The show went off-air shortly after, and WWE.com reported the angle within minutes as though it were a legitimate occurrence, proclaiming that McMahon was "presumed dead". The June 25 Raw was scheduled to be a three-hour memorial to "Mr. McMahon". However, due to the actual death of Chris Benoit, the show opened with McMahon standing in an empty arena, acknowledging that her father's reported death was only of his character as part of a storyline. This was followed by a tribute to Benoit that filled the three-hour timeslot. McMahon's last appearance on WWE television until 2009 was the next night on ECW on Sci Fi where, alongside Vince, Stephanie and Shane McMahon, after acknowledging that a tribute to Benoit had aired the previous night, she announced that there would be no further mention of Benoit due to the circumstances becoming apparent, and that the ECW show would be dedicated to those that had been affected by the Benoit murders.

On January 26th 2009, McMahon returned to WWE television alongside Stephanie McMahon following her father being punted in the head by Randy Orton. Orton claimed that he suffered from IED, and that he was not responsible for his actions towards Mr. McMahon, claiming that he suffered a "loss of control" because of the disorder. He also claimed that WWE knew of the condition, but did nothing, and threatened to sue WWE for that reason, and also, if Stephanie were to fire him, threatened a second lawsuit for breach of contract, due to the fact that he was legally entitled to compete at WrestleMania because he won the Royal Rumble. Though Stephanie teased firing Orton, she changed her mind and said she had "bigger plans", leading to Shane McMahon returning to Raw and attacking Orton. This led to Orton facing Shane in a No Holds Barred match at No Way Out, which he won. The next night on Raw, Orton faced Shane again in an unsanctioned match, which ended in no contest when he punted Shane in the head, thus rendering him unable to continue the match. McMahon and Stephanie then ran down to the ring to tend to their brother, but Orton attacked Stephanie with an RKO and McMahon with a punt. This drew Triple H into the feud. At Wrestlemania, McMahon accompanied Triple H to the ring for his match against Orton which he won.

At the end of the July 18th 2011 episode of Raw, McMahon returned on behalf of WWE's board of directors to relieve her father Vince McMahon of his duties. This was during a storyline where CM Punk had won the WWE Championship and left the company. Though a new champion was crowned, Triple H helped re-sign Punk and upheld both championship reigns. He announced he would referee a match to unify both WWE Championships at SummerSlam. Although he counted a pinfall for CM Punk to win, John Cena's leg was on the ropes, which would break the pin. During her reign as GM, the majority of Raw superstars gave a vote of no confidence in McMahon and she was relieved of her duties in October 2011 by her returning father.

The Authority (2013-15)

On August 19th 2013, McMahon returned to television at the Summerslam event. Following Daniel Bryan defeated John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, McMahon made her way to the ring to present Bryan with his championship. As he held the title, she pulled it away from him and hit him in the face, leading to a Pedigree from Triple H before Randy Orton cashed in his Money In The Bank contract and defeated Bryan. The following night, McMahon revealed her reasons for attacking Bryan claiming it was "best for business". McMahon's sister Stephanie later named her WWE's Director of Operations. McMahon would go on to become the manager of Orton for a second time.

On the November 25 episode of Raw, Orton's long time rival, then World Heavyweight Champion John Cena, suggested that there should only be "one champion" in WWE. McMahon announced a unification match at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs, where Orton defeated Cena in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match to unify his WWE Championship with Cena's World Heavyweight Championship, which ultimately created the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

In June 2014, as part of the ongoing storyline with Bryan, McMahon threatened to fire his wife Brie Bella if Bryan did not relinquish the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which forced Brie to quit before slapping McMahon in the face. After Brie quit, Stephanie McMahon put Brie's sister Nikki in several handicap matches as punishment. The storyline concluded when McMahon accompanied Stephanie to her match against Bella which Stephanie won after interference from McMahon and Bella's sister Nikki turning on her, allowing Stephanie to hit a pedigree on Brie having Stephanie win her first pay per view match in over 10 years.

On the October 27 episode of Raw, after John Cena, the #1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, rejected an offer to join the Authority, Triple H announced a Traditional Survivor Series tag team elimination match, with a team representing the Authority facing a team captained by Cena. On the November 3 episode of Raw, Vince McMahon announced that if Team Authority loses at Survivor Series, the Authority will be ousted from power. During the match, Triple H tried to get the last member of Team Cena, Dolph Ziggler, eliminated by attacking two referees and placing Seth Rollins (who was also the final member of Team Authority) on top of Ziggler and calling crooked referee Scott Armstrong into the ring to make the count; however, the debuting Sting came out and attacked Armstrong and Triple H, giving Team Cena the win and thus disbanding The Authority. McMahon, Stephanie and Triple H appeared on the episode of Raw after Survivor Series stating that without them the company would be driven to the ground. They were then escorted out of the arena by the returning Daniel Bryan and only to be insulted by Mr.McMahon for letting him down and the McMahon family before exiting the arena.

McMahon would return to television in January 2015, managing Seth Rollins in his attempt to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat match against Cena and champion Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble, which Lesnar won after pinning Rollins. At Fastlane, Rollins, Big Show and Kane defeated the team of Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan and Ryback; however after the match Randy Orton returned and attacked Noble, Mercury and Kane, while Rollins fled the arena. After weeks of teasing a reunion with The Authority, Orton eventually attacked Rollins, which led to a match between the two at WrestleMania 31 on March 29, which Rollins lost. Later that night, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract during Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns' WWE World Heavyweight Championship match, thus turning it into a triple threat match and pinned Reigns to win the title for the first time in his career. Rollins continued his feud with Orton after WrestleMania 31, which led to a steel cage match for the championship with Orton's RKO banned and Kane as the gatekeeper at Extreme Rules on April 26, where Rollins retained after interference from Kane. McMahon continued to manage Rollins until, on November 4, during a match against Kane at a WWE live event in Dublin, Ireland, Rollins tore the ACL, MCL and medial meniscus in his knee while attempting to execute a sunset flip powerbomb.

Brief Returns (2016, 2018-Present)

On the February 22, 2016 episode of Raw, Mr. McMahon presented the "Vincent J. McMahon Legacy of Excellence" award to Stephanie. Before she could start her acceptance speech, McMahon and brother Shane returned to television and demanded to gain control of Raw, claiming The Authority was running the company to the ground. Mr. McMahon accepted the offer, only if he won one more match. Shane accepted, and Mr. McMahon announced he would wrestle at WrestleMania 32 against The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell. On the post-WrestleMania episode of Raw on April 4, Mr. McMahon opened the show to announce that McMahon and Shane would run Raw for one night only. However, Shane continued to run Raw due to "overwhelming fan support" until the April 25 episode of Raw, when Stephanie returned to announce that Mr. McMahon would decide who'd permanently control Raw at Payback. Mr. McMahon announced that McMahon, Stephanie and Shane would run Raw together on a permanent basis, thus disbanding The Authority.

McMahon would later return to WWE television again on the December 17, 2018 episode of Monday Night Raw, accompanied by her father Mr. McMahon, brother Shane, sister Stephanie and brother-in-law Triple H, promising to shake things up as they admitted they weren't performing as well as they should have. Mr. McMahon announced that the five of them would now run both Monday Night Raw, and SmackDown Live together.
