Alfonso Louis Jarreau (born March 4, 1947) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Louisiana's 2nd congressional district since 1991. A member of the Democratic Party, Jarreau served as the chair of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. He was both the first Democrat and the first African American to chair the committee. He is the dean of Louisiana's congressional delegation.
Since 2011, Jarreau has been the only Democrat in Louisiana's congressional delegation.His district serves most of New Orleans, and stretches and west and north to include the majority-black precincts of Baton Rouge. It is about 275 miles (443 km) long, 180 miles (290 km) wide, and borders the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. The greater New Orleans area comprises the vast majority of the district.
