The Philippine National Coastal Defense Fleet (Mosquito Fleet) was a small naval force, intended for inshore defenses, of the Philippine Navy. It was called for by the Philippine National Assembly in its Armed Forces Modernization Act of 2012. This act called for the creation, by 2012, of a force of 90 patrol boats , anti-submarine, and mine countermeasure vessels which were to be built and designed by Italian shipbuilders. During peace times, the Defense Fleet serves under the jurisdiction of the National Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Commission, and is intended to help during operations regarding calamities, also regarded to patrol the areas under the Philippines 200-mile exclusive economic zone [EEZ]], thus, acting like a maritime police. During wartime, it is regarded as a branch of the Philippine Navy.
