Growing up in Israel, Roy started as a guitarist playing with artists such as Corinne Allal and Eli Soorani. In New York, he co-wrote, produced and instrumented a number of albums with his band Nanuchka (with Yula Yael Beeri) and his band Electro Morocco (with Assaf Spector) as well as preforming live shows worldwide. Simultaneously, Roy was producing records for and performing with Assaf Spector, Derek James, The Blue Eighty Eights and Benjamin Adair Murphy. In 2020, Gurel worked with Benjamin Adair Murphy on a political blues album Lets Make a King. Roy co-wrote the music, produced, instrumented, mixed and mastered this social commentary dealing with contemporary American issues, brilliantly inscribed by Murphy.

Roy produced and instrumented his first solo debut album- Trouble Came- in 2016. In 2022, he released his second album Thongsala Prison Blues, which takes a personal introspective tone, and pays homage to the familiar heroes of song, incorporating elements of rock ‘n’ roll, folk, blues and country. Thongsala Prison Blues was conceived, written, produced, instrumented, mixed and mastered by Roy Gurel.
