Miraclass (pronounced /miɾakɯɾas/ using IPA, Mirakeullaseu using Revised Romanization, Korean: 미라클라스) is a South Korean crossover quartet formed in 2017 on the JTBC audition program Phantom Singer 2. The group consists of baritone Julian Jootaek Kim, tenor Phillip Jeong, pop tenor Kang-hyun Park, and bass Tain Han . They achieved runner-up status on Phantom Singer 2,[1] and released the album Romantica in 2018.[2] Following this, they participated in Phantom Singer concerts[3] and their own performances[4][5] while also pursuing individual projects: Julian Jootaek Kim performed operas in Italy,[6][7][8][9] Kang-hyun Park appeared in musicals such as Kinky Boots,[10] The Man Who Laughs,[11] and Mozart!.[12] Jeong and Han formed the jazz/easy listening duo "Feel in."[13][14] During the COVID-19 pandemic, they expanded their fanbase through their participation in Phantom Singer All Stars.[15][16]
Individually, the members have continued their careers: Julian Jootaek Kim was cast as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera musical,[17] Phillip Jeong released classical albums,[18] Kang-hyun Park performed protagonist roles in musicals like Hadestown,[19] Memphis,[20] and Dear Evan Hansen,[21] and appeared in TV dramas,[22] and Tain Han has been producing adult-oriented and animation rock musics in the indie scene[23][24] with multiple albums.[25][26] The group conducted a national tour in 2022,[27] and engages with fans through their YouTube channel, launched in 2021.[28]
Phantom Singer 2 (2017)
[edit]Phantom Singer 2
[edit]Phantom Singer is a TV show designed to form male crossover quartet groups through a competitive audition process. Following the successful launch of its first season in 2016,[29] JTBC aired Season 2 in 2017.[30] The Phantom Singer series features a diverse group of participants,[30] including classical vocalists, musical actors, K-pop idols, traditional Korean musicians (Korean: 국악인), and amateurs from various fields.[31][32] Members of Miraclass emerged from these auditions, showcasing their talents and forming the group as part of the show's process.
Kang-hyun Park, a musical actor who had been on the scene for a year, was the first of the members to appear on the show.[33] In his first TV audition, he performed "She Was There" from The Scarlet Pimpernel, earning praise for his high notes and achieving the highest viewership rating per minute.[34]
Julian Jootaek Kim, an established opera singer in Europe,[35] performed F. Chopin’s "Tristezza."[36] His performance was praised by Producer Hye-Soo Sonn, who remarked, "When an opera singer reaches that high a level, the detail lies in complete control of the breathing."[37]
Phillip Jeong, a part-time member of the Busan Metropolitan Chorus,[38] sang R. Leoncavallo's "Mattinata",[39] which means 'morning' in Italian, with producers noting his voice suited a bright morning.[40]
Tain Han, a student in the Department of Vocal Music at Seoul National University,[41] performed the jazz standard "I've Got The World On A String,"[42] though this performance was not aired. Despite his classical training, Han had experience performing in a rock band in Hongdae before joining Phantom Singer 2.[43]
Each member advanced through various stages, including one-on-one duet competitions, duet showdowns, trio competitions, and quartet competitions, to reach the final 12. Notable performances include Han's rendition of Billy Joel’s "Piano Man" which was noted for his rhythm, soft phrasing, and stage manner.[44] Kim's duet performance of "A Blooming Day (Korean: 꽃 피는 날)" ranked fourth among the 14 teams but narrowly missed advancing by 2 points.[45] Park's duet with Lee Choong Joo, "As Flowers Bloom and Fall (Korean: 꽃이 피고 지듯이)," ranked first in the duet showdown.[46] Jeong's trio performance of "Look Inside" by Mark Vincent received well-received and secured second place among the 8 teams.[47] In the semi-final round, the quartet Jeong belonged to achieved the highest score with their performance of "La Vita."[48]

The four members faced various challenges and moments of praise throughout the competition but ultimately reached the final 12.[49] Among the finalists, Forestella and Edel Reinklang have been singing together since the trio mission.[50] Alongside Miraclass, these two teams emerged as strong contenders due to their vocal harmonies and cohesive performances. Forestella, known for their unique blend of classical and pop music, and Edel Reinklang, celebrated for their rich vocal textures and dynamic stage presence, both formed a tight-knit bond during the trio or quartet missions.[51] They already had a team name or a name close to their final form, showcasing their readiness and unity.
When the members of Miraclass first met, only Julian Jootaek Kim and Kang-hyun Park had sung together once, while the other two had never sung with the other members.[52] They needed a team name quickly, and Jeong came up with "Miraclass" by coining “miracle” and “class,” signifying that they would deliver unique interpretations of classical music or innovative reinterpretations of music.[53] The final competitions were divided into two episodes.[54] The first final was held in front of a selected audience who could vote, along with the six producers who could also vote.[54] Each team performed two songs. The first song by Miraclass was Luciano Pavarotti’s “Notte,” which won first place among the three teams[55] and achieved the peak minute rating of 5.5%.[56] Their second song, Within Temptation’s "Forsaken," was noted for its powerful delivery, comparable to a 15-member male choir.[57] Despite their strong performances, the combined total points placed Miraclass slightly behind the other two teams.
The second final competition was held at the Peace Hall in Kyung Hee University in front of 3,500 audience members and online voters.[58] The first song by Miraclass was Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever,”[59] followed by Alessandro Safina’s “Feelings.”[60] "Feelings" was noted for its poignant emotions, and it captivated the audience with its harmonies and lyrics.[60] Miraclass ended up as the runner-up when the votes were counted.[61] While the group's future was uncertain at the end of the show, as the program supports only the winning team, it marked the beginning of Miraclass.[61]
Post-Phantom Singer 2 activities (2017-2019)
[edit]After Phantom Singer 2, all three finalist teams, Forestella, Miraclass, and Edel Reinklang, embarked on the Phantom Singer concert tour starting on December 3, 2017, in Incheon, and continuing through Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, Ulsan, Seoul, Cheongju, Ilsan, and Busan in South Korea until February 10, 2018.[62][63] The concert featured solo, duet, trio, and quartet performances from Phantom Singer 2, but also childhood videos and interviews of the participants, performances with swapped roles, and stages with new combinations of singers, offering a variety of entertainment that was not seen on the broadcast.[63] The concerts were sold out in many cities.[64]
Miraclass held their first concert for fans on April 22, 2018.[4] They recorded a studio album, Romantica,[65] which was on the Hot 100 Korean album chart for three weeks, from the 41st to the 43rd weeks in 2018.[66] [67] Romantica includes "Nelle tue mani," "Il Mondo," "On the Way Home (Korean: 집으로 가는 길)", which is "The Ludlows" by James Horner with Korean lyrics, and their own new song "Now I Know (Korean: 이젠 알아요)".[2]
Miraclass embarked on their first concert tour, the Romantica Tour from October 13 to December 28 in 2018, performing in four cities at multiple venues in South Korea.[68] The concerts featured rearranged theme songs from movies and musicals, as well as songs performed during the competition and individual solo stages, offering a variety of performances.[67] The tour included a full orchestra, with the Korea Coop Orchestra led by conductor Jeong Hyun Cho enhancing the quartet's harmony with rich and grandiose arrangements.[67] During the concert tour, fans of Miraclass donated over 1,000 pounds of rice to those in need instead of sending traditional flowers or gifts to the artists.[69]
Forte di Quatro, Forestella, and Miraclass started an annual tour called Phantom of Classic in late 2019.[70] However, the tour was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Individual member activities (2017-2019)
[edit]During the period between the closing of Phantom Singer 2 in late 2017 and the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, the members of Miraclass were actively involved in various projects.
Julian Jootaek Kim frequently traveled between Italy for opera performances[71][72] and Korea to work as a member of Miraclass. He was the Figaro at Teatro La Fenice in Italy from 2017 to 2019,[73][74][75] participating in 34 out of 47 performances of Il barbiere di Siviglia, missing 13 to participate in Phantom Singer 2 in South Korea. He appeared in a total of nine opera productions, including La Traviata (as Germont),[76] La bohème (as Marcello),[77] L'elisir d'amore (as Belcore),[78][79] and Don Carlo (as Rodrigo)[80] across various Italian opera theaters. He also returned to Korea for the album release of Romantica and the concert tour as a member of Miraclass during this period.[65][81][82]
Phillip Jeong and Tain Han formed a duo team, Feel in, in 2019, promoting easy listening music,[83] and released a single[84] and a studio album[85] titled Feel in. They held five concerts, including an in-flight concert to celebrate the new air route between Seoul and Milan for Asiana Airlines,[86] and one charity concert in Hong Kong.[87]
Jeong performed in various concerts such as the Bernstein Memorial Concert in 2017,[88] Opera Carnival in 2018,[89] and the Gala Concert for The Taming of Casanova.[90]
Tain Han also participated in classical crossover performances, including Mozart Opera Concertante - Don Giovanni in 2018,[91] the Gala Concert of The Taming of Casanova,[90] and The 2nd Cheongpung Lakeside Music Festival in 2019.[92] Tain Han also held the True Colours concert at Gurumare Theater in early 2020.[93]
Kang-hyun Park, an emerging musical actor prior to Phantom Singer 2, became more prominent in the stage musical scene, frequently cast as leading roles in both original Korean and licensed musicals. During the Phantom Singer 2 concert tour, he was involved in musicals such as Chilseo[94] and Gwanghwamun Love Song.[95] Following the tour, his roles included Kinky Boots (as Charlie Price),[96] The Man Who Laughs (as Gwynplaine),[97][98] Elizabeth (as Luigi Lucheni),[99] Xcalibur (as Lancelot),[100] Marie Antoinette (as Axel von Fersen the Younger),[101] and a reprisal of the role of Gwynplaine in The Man Who Laughs[102] from 2018 to early 2020. He also held his first solo concert, Melody in Blue, in Seoul, Korea,[103] performing a variety of Korean popular songs, pop songs like "City of Stars" from La La Land and "The Scientist" by Coldplay, and musical numbers to a full audience.[104]

Miraclass and individual member activities in Korea during COVID-19
[edit]In February 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy was severe, leading to widespread lockdowns and the cancellation of public events, including opera performances.[121] As a result, Julian Jootaek Kim could not travel to Italy, and all his scheduled operas were canceled. Korea also restricted cultural events in closed spaces until late June 2020,[122] when restrictions were eased, allowing performances to take place.[123]
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of Miraclass and the group itself remained active in Korea, participating in various cultural events and performances with strict health protocols in place.
As a group, Miraclass held concerts titled A Fairy Tale in Four Colors (Korean: 사색동화) in October 2020 and January 2021,[124][125] although they had to cancel in some venues. The concerts, themed 'retro,' featured Korean pop songs from the 1990s, focusing more on harmony and subtlety rather than their usual arrangements and powerful vocal delivery.[126] They also performed various musical numbers. To evoke a warm, old-fashioned sentiment, the concerts utilized arrangements with a band session and a string ensemble of about ten members, instead of a full orchestra.[127] Due to COVID-19, the number of performers on stage was reduced, and the audience was required to wear masks, with cheering prohibited and clapping allowed to ensure safety.[128]
Individually, the members of Miraclass also pursued various projects. Kang-hyun Park starred in the musical Mozart! in June 2020.[129] The production ran for three months but closed earlier than planned due to the pandemic. Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 opened in March 2021 after a significant delay. Interaction with the audience was prohibited in this immersive musical, where Park played Anatole Kuragin.[130] Despite the circumstances, Park's performance was well-received.[131]
Julian Jootaek Kim performed in the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Peace Concert at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, which was held one month later than the commemoration day due to the outbreak.[132] Kim and Phillip Jeong performed in Opera Carnival 2020 at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall,[133] and the Opera Carnival 2020 Encore at the Lotte Concert Hall.[134] Kim also took part in Opera Fashion at the Lotte Concert Hall,[135] and Samuel Yoon's Opera Climax at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall in late 2020.[136]
Tain Han held a concert named Over the Beatles, where he sang The Beatles songs and curated the event, reflecting his passion for genres beyond classical music.[137] Additionally, he held a solo concert titled 5959 LIVE in November 2020, performing jazz and easy listening music.[138]
Phantom Singer All Stars (2021)
[edit]Phantom Singer All Stars
[edit]During the COVID-19 period, when most of the offline performances were canceled, JTBC aired a twelve-episode special called Phantom Singer All Stars from January to April 2021.[139] This program featured the top three quartets from all three seasons, including Miraclass. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and the lack of other performance opportunities, all 36 members from the nine teams were able to participate.[140] With no studio audience, the show used a live stream feed of hundreds of online audience members projected on a screen to simulate the presence of a live audience.[141]
Unlike previous seasons, this special was not a competition with eliminations. Instead, quartets competed in various missions for a trophy and special prizes.[139] Quartets voted among themselves for the first mission, while subsequent rounds included votes from a celebrity panel and the online audience.[141] In the final episode of "Phantom Singer Friends," the quartets were reconfigured based on song preferences, with the newly formed groups performing selected classical crossover songs from Phantom Singer seasons 1, 2, or 3 with different arrangements.[142]
Formed just before the final stage of Phantom Singer 2, Miraclass had only performed four final songs in 2017.[143] Phantom Singer All Stars provided an opportunity for them to showcase their harmony as a team and increase their visibility to the general public.[144] Miraclass performed well in the show, winning MVP in the first mission among the nine teams.[145] They performed a variety of songs in different rounds, including team challenges, solo performances, season battles, genre battles, and the ultimate auditory pleasure contest (Korean: 귀호강 끝판왕전), achieving multiple victories and gaining renewed recognition from viewers.[146] Notable performances included a rendition of Josh Groban's "Mai," which earned them an MVP title,[147] and "Cherry Blossom Love Song (Korean: 벚꽃연가)" with an arrangement by Tain Han that featured the Korean musical instrument Haegeum and a solo part by Kang-hyun Park.[148] Julian Jootaek Kim's solo "Perdere l'amore" was particularly well-received,[149] and Phillip Jeong's timbre was praised multiple times throughout the show.[150][151] As their final song, Miraclass sang Westlife's "I'll See You Again," signaling a promise to return.[146]
Phantom Singer All Stars indeed provided an opportunity for Miraclass to showcase their talent as a team.[152] Despite their strong individual careers, the public saw that the group maintained close bonds between the members.
Launch of the YouTube channel Just-10-minute
[edit]Members of Miraclass engaged with their fans through online platforms. Phillip Jeong had his own YouTube channel,[153] where all Miraclass members appeared while preparing for Phantom Singer All Stars on the first day of 2021, which received a positive response.[154][155] This led them to launch a new channel, Just-10-minute,[156] with producer Mexicomini52, who also produced Jeong’s channel.[157] The first season, starting in April 2021, featured an initial episode where they composed an 8-measure signal song with quartet harmony for the channel in just 10 minutes.[158] Han created the song in 7 minutes, while Kim harmonized with Jeong, and Park participated quietly. They also practiced the harmony with a counter melody. Subsequent episodes of Season 1 included small challenges to be completed in 10 minutes.[159]
Phantom Singer All Stars: Gala Concerto Series
[edit]JTBC held the Phantom Singer All Stars: Gala Concerto Series after the show, adhering to COVID-19 protocols in 2021.[160] The series took place at Olympic Hall, Seoul, Korea but featured changing teams over nine events.[161] With social distancing measures in place, society was gradually returning to normal, although it was not yet complete and faced sudden threats of closing down. Despite these challenges, they managed to hold the concert events.
The following table summarizes the individual and group activities of Miraclass during the COVID-19 outbreak. Individual activities of Julian Jootaek Kim
[edit]Following a fan concert in 2021,[174] Julian Jootaek Kim launched a series of concerts titled Baritone Julian Jootaek Kim's Music Library, featuring opera arias, classical tunes, Italian canzones, musical numbers, and Korean songs.[175][176][177][178] Julian Jootaek Kim has performed in 67 concerts since 2021, as of June 2024.[179]
In 2022, Kim did not undertake major projects like operas but auditioned for the role of the Phantom in the musical The Phantom of the Opera and was selected.[180] He began preparing for rehearsals, which were delayed due to the COVID-19 situation. In late December 2022, it was announced that Kim was cast as the Phantom in the Korean replica production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.[181]
Julian Jootaek Kim's debut as the Phantom on March 28, 2023 showcased his operatic and high baritone vocal talents. Known as the 'Eastern Cappuccilli' for his European opera performances,[182] Kim's transition to musicals was positively received. Critics noted his portrayal of the Phantom's fixation on Christine and depiction of the Phantom's madness with his powerful vocal presence.[183]
Ahead of the Seoul performances, Kim expressed his approach to the role, focusing on his possessive relationship with Christine.[184] His rendition of "The Music of the Night" received positive feedback,[185] with critics highlighting his ability to deliver a compelling performance.[185] Kim's portrayal evolved over the year, with a more nuanced transition from obsession to discovering love.[186] This role earned him the Best New Male Artist Award at The 8th Korea Musical Awards.[187]
Julian Kim played Pierre Bezukhov in the Korean production of the musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 from March to June 2024.[188] His performance highlighted his vocal abilities and nuanced acting, bringing to life Pierre, a thoughtful and introspective member of the Russian aristocracy.[189]
He has three upcoming concert appearances between July and September 2024.[190][191][192]
Individual activities of Phillip Jeong
[edit]Jeong, alongside his Miraclass teammate Baritone Julian Jootaek Kim and the BeHa Philharmonic Orchestra, participated in a program that toured nine cities in 2022 and 2023. They performed a diverse repertoire that included opera arias, Korean lyric songs, Spanish and Italian melodies, and musical numbers.[193][194][195][196][197]

In a statement, Jeong remarked, "I aimed to deliver vivid emotions to the audience using just the piano and my vocal strength, without any amplification. I look forward to presenting even larger and more refined performances for my fans in the future."[199] He continues to dedicate himself to his vocal studies. In November 2023, he released the album Esòrdio,[200] and held his second solo recital, maintaining an active and dynamic career.[201] Phillip Jeong's concert Esòrdio featured a varied setlist. The program included classical pieces such as “Mattinata” by R. Leoncavallo, “Vaga luna che inargenti” by V. Bellini, and “O del mio amato ben” by S. Donaudy. Jeong also performed several songs by F. P. Tosti, including “A vucchella,” “La serenata,” “L'ultima canzone,” “Non t'amo più,” and “L'alba separa dalla luce l'ombra.” Additionally, the program featured “Malinconia, ninfa gentile” by V. Bellini, the German song “Ich liebe dich,” and the Korean song “One flower blooms (Korean: 나하나 꽃피어).” This setlist provided a diverse musical experience, blending classical arias, art songs, and contemporary pieces.[202]

[edit]Kang-hyun Park was busy performing in musicals while on the RE:BOOT tour. He played Orpheus in Hadestown from September 2021 to February 2022,[203] earning the 6th Korea Musical Awards for Best Actor[204] and the 16th DIMF Awards for Star of the Year.[205] In 2022, he returned to The Man Who Laughs at the Sejong Center[206] and played Tony in West Side Story in the 2022/2023 season,[207] followed by Huey in Memphis in 2023.[208] Park stars as Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen from March to July 2024[209] and will reprise Orpheus in Hadestown from July to October 2024.[210] He was nominated for Best Actor for Memphis at the 8th Korea Musical Awards in 2024.[211]
Since his debut in 2015, Park has performed in multiple productions annually,[212] earning the Best New Actor award in 2017[213] and Best Actor award in 2022.[214] By 2024, he is a prominent figure in South Korean musical theater.[215] Six years after competing in Phantom Singer 2, Park returned as a producer for Phantom Singer 4, providing valuable feedback to contestants. His transition from contestant to producer within this period was notable.[216]
Park has received acclaim for his "overwhelming vocal ability and clear enunciation,"[217] and "solid and unwavering vocal strength,"[218] especially in high notes.[219] Shin Youngsook praised his skills, predicting his rise as a big star.[220] Known for his character interpretation, Park portrayed a "confident yet immature" Huey in Memphis[221] and a "fragile and anxious" Evan in Dear Evan Hansen,[222] showcasing control over his vocal range and effective character transformation.[223]
Park starred as Sin Do-Sik in the 2023 KBS2 TV drama Heartbeat.[224] and sang for its original soundtrack, "Vampire."[225] Park released a project single "MAGIC" with M SOUND CLOUD Project, produced by Pdogg, the main producer of BTS.[226]
Individual activities of Tain Han
[edit]From the beginning of his appearance in Phantom Singer 2, Tain Han's passion for various music genres was seen.[42] His deep and strong bass voice continues to shine as a member of Miraclass. During Phantom Singer All Stars, Hye-Soo Sonn remarked that Han’s voice sounded like an electric contrabass when performing "Love Runs Out" by OneRepublic.[227] Han has been active in the indie scene since college,[43] with his prominence growing in 2021. In the A Travel with the Six-Strings Concert (六絃紀行)[228] with jazz guitarist Younwoo Park, he curated the show and performed his own "A Dog’s Life," as well as "Knocking on Heaven’s Door," "Padam Padam," "Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You," and other jazzy, easy-listening songs.[228]
Tain Han formed the melodic pop band TAIN with guitarist and producer Kim Jin-ho, focusing on adult-oriented rock with gentle melodies and relatable lyrics.[229] Before forming the band, Tain Han performed solo under the name TAIN.[230] The band's music integrates adult-oriented rock influences, producing melodic pop songs that resonate with audiences.[231] On July 26, 2022, TAIN released their first full-length album, SPORTS, blending nostalgic '90s and '00s sounds with a modern twist.[232]
Along with Kim Jin-ho and Choi Sun-yong, Tain Han formed the three-member "animation rock" band KACHISAN, named after Kachisan subway station in Seoul, South Korea. The band aims to deliver music based on new millennium cartoon theme songs and pop-punk rock genres. KACHISAN released their debut single "Theme of Love" in February 2023,[233] followed by their first full-length album Hello, This is KACHISAN in March 2023.[234] Tain Han sings and plays guitar for KACHISAN, using Richenbacker Jetglo and Fender Stratocaster guitars in indie scenes in South Korea.[235][236][237][238]
The following table summarizes the individual and group activities of Miraclass post-COVID-19. Only major concerts are listed, with the remaining activities indicated by color-coded cells in the table.

Media appearances
[edit]Miraclass frequently appears on Open Concert[259][260][261] and Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend on KBS.[262][263] They have also been featured on SungYol's Global Music Trip on EBS,[264] Choi Hwajung's Power Time on SBS,[265][266] and Duetto's The Classic on YTN Radio.[267] Additionally, on the official JTBC YouTube channel, JTBCPLUS, Shin Yeri, Director of the News Production Department at JTBC, conducted a three-hour interview with Miraclass.[268][269]
YouTube channel: Just-10-minute
[edit]In April 2021, the members of Miraclass launched a YouTube channel titled Just-10-minute.[156] Collaborating with Mexicomini52, the channel features the group engaging in various challenges and activities limited to ten minutes. This project aims to engage with fans by providing regular content that highlights the members' creativity and versatility.[165]
Content and themes
[edit]The channel's content included simple mini-games, skits, and situational dramas, forming its own fictional universe.[270] Notable episodes included an audition for new Miraclass members and the "Mikle Company" series, where members played employees of a fictional company.[271] In Season 3, the channel adopted a high school theme, portraying the members as students who learned different lessons each episode, and the flexibility of the school's environment allowed for both indoor and outdoor activities.[272]
Additional activities
[edit]The channel also featured episodes where the members went camping, engaged in athletic mini-games, traveled to watch the sunrise, participated in an escape game, formed the rock band 'Love in the Power,'[273] and hosted a show for guests.[274] These activities added variety and entertainment value, showcasing the members' versatility and camaraderie.[275]
Audience engagement
[edit]The channel also streams live shows, incorporating YouTube users' responses and answering questions.[276] Sometimes, they sing parts of requested songs, fostering bidirectional engagement with their audience.[277] As of June 2024, the channel is in its fifth season giving fans confidence in the team's solidarity, even when the members are working on separate projects, indicating that Miraclass is a "separately together" team.[278]
