The Göteborg String Theory is a music-art-multimedia project that takes place in Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden in June 2009 and April 2010. It is essentially a collaboration between classical composers from Berlin, Germany and pop artists from Göteborg, Sweden.
The idea of the musical String Theory was born in Berlin in 2007 and developed by Nackt and Chérie of the art-music collective Chez Chérie, Yaneq of the Party Arty beat poetry club and Ben Lauber of the music production company Transporterraum among others. The first ever appearance is known as The Berlin String Theory which involved more than 100 musicians, artists, producers, journalists, designers, technicians, visual artists, a documentary film team, painters and poets.
Berlin-native Sebastian Gäbel and his swedish wife Nathalie Barusta Gäbel participated in The Berlin String Theory. When the Gäbels relocated to Sweden, they wished to host a musical String Theory in Nathalie's hometown of Göteborg. Given the vast amount of musical and artistic talent the city had to offer, and inspired by the support of philosopher Aleksander Motturi (who arranges the annual Clandestino Festival), the Gäbels gathered artists such as Midaircondo, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Pacific!, Studio, Jaqee, Jaw Lesson, Silverbullit, El Perro Del Mar, José González, Fox Machine, Ebbot Lundberg (The Soundtrack of Our Lives), Bow & Arrow and Jmy Haze to form The Göteborg String Theory.
Selected songs by mentioned artists were arranged by the composers Nackt, Ben Lauber and Nils Tegen for the string quartet Qvartiett and other classical musicians. Together with the artists the new renditions were rehearsed and recorded during a five day workshop in June 2009 and then performed for the first time at the Clandestino Festival on June 14th 2009. Every song had to be rehearsed and recorded within two hours. The artists had never before heard the new arrangements, and the orchestra received their sheet music only a few days before the recordings were scheduled to begin. This fact added to the spontaneous nature of the session which – in spite of its professionalism – became a loose and inspirational happening.
The next performance will take place at Göteborgs Konserthus the 17th of April 2010. Even more artists will join The Göteborg String Theory on this evening and premiere their songs in new arrangements: Anna von Hausswolff and Daniel Gilbert, who both recently have released their debut albums, and noise avantgardists The Skull Defekts featuring hardcore legend Daniel Higgs from Baltimore.
The eclectic record label Kning Disk will release an album containing the songs that were recorded in June 2009. Release date: 17 April 2010.
The Göteborg String Theory is arranged by the non-profit organisations Signal, Göteborg and Chez Chérie, Berlin and Kning Disk, with kind support from Västra Götalandsregionen, Goethe Institut, Göteborg & Co, Clandestino Festival, Kokokaka and Konstnärsnämnden.
