Labrador Caribou

[edit]
A Labrador caribou in the wild

The Labrador caribou is native to the Labrador region of Canada. It was first discovered by explorer Henry Hudson on his famous trip to that region. The Labrador caribou is larger than its related subspecies and its fur has a distinct maroon undertone, which makes it easy to distinguish from the regular dull coat of other caribou. The weight of a male Labrador caribou ranges from 160 to 260 kg[1]. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, berries, and grass. Males usually have antlers with 8 prongs on each side although 10-12 prongs are not uncommon. Labrador Caribou is thought to be a delicacy among native peoples of Canada. Their meat is comparatively difficult to salt down and package for longer periods of time, however the "nutty" taste of Labrador caribou jerky is widely considered to be superior to that of other caribou jerky. The mating call of the Labrador caribou sounds can be easily mistaken for that of a walrus to the untrained ear.
