A group of nodes is a constitutent if they consist of all of the material beneath a single node. For example, in the sentence Grandpa drove {home} {to get his sunglasses}, the phrase to get his sunglasses is a constituent, because it consists of all of the material within that modifier. On the other hand, Grandpa drove home is not a constituent, because it leaves the to get his sunglasses modifier out.
