Roberto Maria Grassi

Born 1970 in Turin, is an Italian movie and TV director living and working in France since 1994.

Biography 

Roberto Maria Grassi started his career as a conductor and composer of movie music. Since 1998 he is exclusively working as TV director for audiovisual productions, especially for theater and music and dance. He is a regular contributor of many international TV channels (Rai, Arte, France Television, ZDF, BBC, CCTV, etc.).

Roberto received an eclectic education in Italy (Scientific High School, Master of Arts, Journalism Doctor and Communication Sciences, diploma in composition and conducting, high school of movie direction) and a first course run by a large variety of activities (participation in the creation of music festivals and international awards, creation and presentation of television programs in France and Italy, visiting several European universities, organizer of international concerts, musical composition award) and then, since 1998 he is focused exclusively on writing and making movies for theater, music and dance, exploring the relationships between these disciplines.

During his studies, he had the opportunity to work closely with prominent personalities such as Giorgio Strehler in a course staged at Teatro Piccolo in Milan and Leonard Bernstein for a masterclass in conducting in Siena). Both were an artistic revelation. 

The first conducting experience in 1991 at Domplatz in Salzburg was the starting point of a long musical journey that led him to the creation of the chorus Augusta Choralis of Turin in 1994. During this period he participated in several opera seasons in Turin. He also worked with Riccardo Muti in 1997 in producing the Johannes-Passion by Bach in Ravenna.

Between 1992 and 2002, he turned his attention to music and theatre research. He published his research through magazines and interventions in a large number of conferences, workshops and university courses. He also published some journalist papers as a critic and contributed articles to newspapers such as the Panorama (Milan), Il Giornale della Musica (Turin), La Stampa (Turin), La Repubblica (Milan). He also appeared as a critic on Italian television (RAI 1 and RAI 3).

Concurrently with his conducting career, which saw him conducting concerts in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Spain, England, Switzerland, Monaco, Vatican City; he maintained his presence on television as music journalist. In 1994 together with Alessandro Baricco, Roberto was entrusted with creation and the implementation of a series of 24 programs on opera which was transmitted on the Italian channel RAI. In 1999 he co-created and took part in the 96 musical television series, Les Écrans du Savoir for France5 TV station.

During this period, Roberto began to reflect on the relationship between music, pictures and symbols. His university thesis "The alchemical symbolism in Richard Wagner's Parsifal" was translated and published in Germany in 1995. Between 1997 and 1999, RAI entrusted him with the audiovisual direction production of 22 concerts of the Symphony Orchestra of the RAI Turin. 

As soon Roberto settled in France in 1998, the Theatre des Champs-Elysees asked him to lead the movie making of The Opera Seria, Serse, Agrippina, Semele, La Cenerentola, L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Ariodante, Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Thésée, and Falstaff.

Later, several producers and distributors entrusted Roberto with directing the movies for live performances which were commissioned by French TV stations such as Arte, France 2, France 3, France 4, Mezzo, Paris Première, as well as Italian TV station RAI, ZDF in Germany, RTBF in Belgium, NHK in Japan, etc.

In recent years, many artists, such as David McVicar, Macha Meril, Jean-Marc Luisada Irina Brook, Roland Petit, Michel Bouquet, André Engel, Emmanuelle Haim, Georges Werler, René Jacobs, Jean-Luc Tardieu, Ludovic Lagarde, Alain Sachs, Juan Diego Florez, Jeroen Willems, Jean-Louis Martinoty, Jérôme Kircher, Line Renaud, Eric Elmosnino, William Christie and many others, testified confidence in Roberto, in the direction of their audiovisual productions.
