Thomas E. Heise (born 1953 in Nürnberg) is a German physician, sinologist and researcher in the fields of psychotherapy, anthropological medicine and transcultural medical issues.

Life and work

Heise is the oldest son of the physician Dr. Eberhard Heise and the artist Nina Heise. He obtained his university entrance qualification in 1972 at the Röntgen-Gymnasium in Würzburg. Following his military service, Heise studied medicine and sinology and also attended courses in prehistory and early history as well as archeology at the universities of Würzburg, Bordeaux, Bochum, Taipeh, Essen and Hamburg. In 1985 he obtained his doctoral degree in medicine at the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, and subsequently obtained grants from the German Academic Exchange Service for two years of studies in traditional Chinese medicine in Beijing and Nanjing.

After he pursued specialisations in internal medicine and natural healing, Heise researched different schools of psychiatry and psychotherapy. In 1999, Heise completed a doctorate in sinology and prehistory at Trier and Göttingen. Thereupon he also habilitated in psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover. From 2001, Heise was executive senior doctor of psychosomatic medicine in Chemnitz, and in 2004 he was appointed as medical director of the Klinik für Psychiatrie and Psychotherapie in the Heinrich-Braun-Klinikum Zwickau. From 2010 until 2013, Heise was medical director of the German-Chinese Transcultural Nature Healing Health and Treatment Center in Shanghai.

Heise founded the scholarly book series Das transkulturelle Psychoforum in 1997, and he also is its publisher since then, resulting in 21 volumes. From 2001, Heise has been an executive member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Ethnomedizin (AGEM) (workgroup anthropological medicine) and managing officer of the Arbeitskreis therapeutische Ansätze (workgroup therapeutical approaches) der DTPPP, a non-profit peak organisation of German professionals and institutions that are active in the areas of transcultural psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine. Heise currently researches in these fields:

(1) trans-institutional psychotherapy, (2) Qigong in history, as therapy and its evaluation, (3) various perspectives on the practice of transcultural psychotherapy, (4) transcultural natural healing, with a focus on general medical concepts that have evolved out of the history of all human cultures.

Heise is the founder of the system elektrobio® Transcultural Nature Healing, which was published in English and Chinese for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. This system strives to conceive alternative medicine and complementary medicine from a somewhat more comprehensive standpoint than those designations provide. This idea includes in its approach the sub-systems of conventional medicine, the varied directions that are taken by traditional medicine (e. g., traditional Chinese medicine [TCM], Tibetan medicine, Ayurveda, and others), natural healing, homeopathy, and informational or energy medicine.
