User:Ritchie333/Don't write like Ali G
This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. This page in a nutshell: When changing an article, proof-read it to make sure the grammar is still correct. |
On occasion, I see somebody make a minor change to an article, but forget to change the grammatical case. For example, "Platform 6 and 7 is dedicated to the Heathrow Express". Or, they may write something but make a grammar mistake, such as "Site ranking don't matter in Wikipedia".
As Wikipedia uses standard English "following government guidelines and major dictionaries", these examples are grammatically incorrect. However, when using Multicultural London English as satirised by the comic character Ali G, they make sense. Consequently, whenever I see an error like this, I immediately think of Ali G saying it.
To avoid accidental grammar errors, read the full sentence that you changed. If it jars and you find it starts sounding like Jafaikan patois, change it.
