From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm an eighteen year old college student who lives in the Pacific Northwest, and I am currently in the process of completing my prerequisites for a future career in nursing. Nursing has alway's been considered my "dream job", because of my great interest in ensuring the wellness of others. My goal is to someday be able to help as many people as I can, weather they are struggling mentally or physically. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time outdoors, specifically going on hikes with my friends and family. Although I am a very active person, I do like to take some time to relax and read a book by my favorite author, Jodi Picoult, or simply listen to music while playing with my dog.

During my time on Wikipedia, I have become interested in quite a few subjects of content. The health category entices me due to the many articles containing specific topics such as, self care and nutrition. I enjoy reading about article's that contain any information about human body functioning, as well as the theories behind scientific research and discoveries. I find that the wide variety of content Wikipedia covers is helpful when I need to find a place to start searching for basic sources on any writing assignment. In the future, I could see myself writing about illness, and specific research findings coinciding with diseases, such as cancer. I would like to be able to write about content that could potentially educate a small portion of Wikipedia users.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

I've always enjoyed being involved in sports. During my high school career, I competed in track and field for my high school team. Right off the bat, I was immediately drawn to the jumping events, more specifically, the triple jump. I took it upon myself to become proficient in this event, for the challenge of learning the detailed skills implemented within the jump enticed me. I would like the triple jump coverage on Wikipedia to be presented as well as possible. I visited the triple jump page on wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: It's lack of citations, it's incomplete sections, and it's grammatical errors.

Citations

[edit]

I've recognized that there are some citations implemented within the article, however, there are not very many. There are general references and sources down at the bottom of the page, however most of these references are cited to only two sections covered in the article. Many sections do not have a reference or citation corresponding with its subject matter, making it questionable as to where the information presented was discovered. Overall, the article is in need of more sources, as well as citations placed within the text.

Incomplete Sections

[edit]

In regards to the completeness of the article, I've noticed that a particular section is missing information. Under the section titled "Seasons Best", there is a data chart that shows both men and women's seasonal best jump marks of the given year. Within the data grid, there are marks that have been recorded for men dating back to 1967, however the women's data chart also dates back to 1967, but no data is plugged in until 1986. The article states that the women's triple jump was not an olympic event until 1996, but women still competed in the event many years before, and their marks were recorded. With that in mind, there is no reason for the article to be lacking in data .

Grammatical Errors

[edit]

Throughout the article, I took note to a few grammatical errors. Basic grammar rules seem to have been ignored when it came to proper punctuation. In particular, this can be seen by the lack of proper use of commas in the text.

Summary

[edit]

In conclusion, despite a few grammatical errors, the article itself is well written. However, this page is lacking in citations for many sections, which makes it difficult to trust the reliability of the information. This is clearly seen in the section titled "Technique", which contains six paragraphs of content without reliable sources or citations provided. There are also missing pieces of information within a data chart created, if this missing data is plugged in, then the structure of the article could be considered more of a "polished" product.

(note: for this assignment, I posted a constructive suggestion titled "no sources added in "technique" section" on the talk page of the triple jump page here
