TheShop.build is a US-based, privately owned company that operates unique design and innovation facilities that provide a service-based platform enabling subscription-based access to a wide variety of industrial design, prototyping, and fabrication tool and technology along with related supporting services. As of September 2018, TheShop.build operates sites located in Northern California. The first TheShop.build location opened in February 2018 at 926 Howard Street, in the South of Market (SOMA) disrict of San Francisco. Located in the former Hearst building, TheShop.build occupies the entire 3 story building with approximately 15,000 square feet of space equipped with specialized equipment and workshop space. TheShop.build's 2nd location at 401 Charcot Ave in San Jose opened in August 2018 with over 30,000 square feet of workspace and a similar, but slightly differentiated set of of conventional and computerized machinery. TheShop.build operates provides subscription-based access to these resources in order to enable individuals and businesses to access specialized technology and a community of supportive peers that would otherwise be out of reach. Subscribers (known as members) have access to the following categories of resources as of September 2018:
Woodworking (conventional wood shop and computer-controlled equipment) Computerized Vinyl Sign & Stencil Cutting Access to high-end computer-assisted design (CAD) and computer-assisted machining (CAM software) Metalworking (conventional machine shop and computer-controlled equipment such as a waterjet cutter, 3 and 4 axis CNC milling machines, and CNC lathes)) Garment Printing (silk screen and vinyl applique) Plastic Shaping & Fabrication (3D printing, vacuum forming, heat bending, and injection molding Electronic Design, Fabrication, and Diagnostics (including printed circuit board production) Sewing and Textile Production (standard and industrial sewing and serging machines as well as computerized embroidery software & equipment Multi-purpose computerized laser cutting machines Picture Framing Tools & Equipment including conventional and computer-controlled glass and mat cutting equipment Welding Studio (Oxyacetylene, Stick, MIG, and TIG)
TheShop.build also offers specialized training to members and the public on various technologies as well as proper use of on-premises equipment and machinery. TheShop.build also provides an incubator-like environment for individuals and small businesses that seek shared and dedicated co-working and office space with close proximity to the extensive design, prototyping, and production equipment and infrastructure.
