Visual Artist

Paints out of memory: observations of musicality; visions of angels and nudity; reminiscences of coffee. Every stroke of his brush reveals each memory’s truth and beauty, for each memory holds a deep and relative meaning; each intimate, each reflective. This is where his art began and evolved.

Pollock lured him. Basquiat inspired him. [Picasso] influenced him. Joya encouraged him. But his artistry was borne out of no formal training. Nevertheless, his craft emerged from a muse disguised as a canvas, as a brush, as paint… and from the fervor he had in him to create. He abandoned his job as a graphic artist to pursue his passion as a painter. He believed that his calling to be an artist came in 2001. Now, at 30, his will is not only to fulfill his sentiments through a wonderful form of expression, but to show his masterpieces as well:

GUITARS

A staunch believer of the Christian God, Richard reiterates the Gospel fact that we are instruments of God in different ways. In his works, he experimented with guitar parts painted in different colors and taken in various orders, giving a deconstructed and reconstructed look. One wouldn’t look at this musical instrument the same way. For Richard, we are all guitars, and God is our guitarist. The guitar’s sound and look depends on the way the guitarist plays it and makes it. God has made each guitar differently, but each guitar has been made perfectly. And we constantly change in form, structure, and sound, depending on how he is molding us to be.

Richard has always been fond of music. He played the guitar during his days in a band. He also played other instruments, then i.e. drums, bass, and keyboards in his bands CATHENA and BOHDIQUA, an African term for friend. CLOCKWORK (Jazz Standards, Drummer), DALISAY (Metal Experimental, Drummer) and LIQUID GINGER (Experimental), MONO TEMPLE (Sound Art) or the most part, his art has been inspired by music.

Aside from religion and music, Richard also draws inspiration from the beauty and art in a woman’s body. He looks at guitars as a semblance of a nude female body. He sees the curves, shapes and corners of a guitar as a female figure. Thus, in his paintings, he had tried to create a human in guitar form.

ANGELS & NUDITY

This time, Richard looks at the beauty of nudity---stripped of everything; uncovered and unadorned; bare and empty; natural to the core; nothing owned. Acknowledging our nakedness is acknowledging our home, where we really belong, how we really are. This then is acknowledging fearlessness and equality as the root of our existence. Nudity takes us back to our infancy, when everything is simple, innocent, and raw. If we look further, nudity takes us down to our bones. And, the color of our bones is one and the same. The beauty of nudity is simplicity and equality. Angels are celestial beings, whose divinity exudes nudity, simplicity, and equality. An angel is neither a man nor a woman, and doesn’t take any nationality, color, race, status, etc. Therefore, an angel doesn’t hold any discrimination. And angels don’t really wear anything.

COFFEE

The aroma of coffee for Richard is the best scent to perk his creativity. When he smells coffee, colors and shades appear before his eyes. Ideas and concepts form in a cup of coffee. He makes it a point, then, to draw regularly in a coffee shop.

Vivid in his own style and identity, [Richard Tuason] makes room for his interpretation of cubism, minimalism, surrealism, and geometrical art.

His beneficiaries include the NEW BEGINNINGS FOUNDATION, INC. and SPARK HOPE (UNICEF)
