Across the world many do not know the underlying dangers of certain amphibians and the catastrophic symptoms that can occur from exposure. Many poisonous amphibians, are very colorful and small in size. Amphibians, referring to frogs, are found primarily in warm climates, that of rain forests.

This is the Golden Poison frog.

Poison dart frog

Found in Costa Rica, poison dart frogs, also known as the poison arrow frog were given their name from indigenous times. Indigenous peoples would use their toxic secretions and cover the tips of their arrows.

Poison dart frog characteristics

Commonly poison dart frogs are small amphibians. Weighing in at approximately 2 grams, most common dart frogs are less than 2 inches in length. Dart frogs come in a variety of bright and vibrant colors. The colors correlate with the toxicity levels of the frog.

Golden poison frog

The Golden poison frog, Phyllobates terribilis is a type of dart frog that is specific to Western Colombia. The Golden poison frog typically is found near the riverbeds or on the ground in rainforests. The Golden poison frog specifically is found by moist tropical areas and lay their eggs on land. The male frogs once the tadpoles hatch carry them to larger water areas to grow and become a Golden Poison frog through metamorphosis.

Golden poison characteristics

Golden poison frogs are typically of the yellowish hue, given its name, as well as measure small in stature at approximately 2 inches. The Golden poison frog on average, carries about one milligram of poison which could kill anywhere between 10 and 20 humans. The poison is stored in skinRed-backed poison frog

The red-backed poison frog is known for the red-backing the frog produces. Found primarily in the rainforests of Peru,the red-backed poison frog is considered the second most poisonous frog in its genus.

Red-backed poison frog characteristics

Besides the definite color combination of the red-backed frog, adult frogs range from 15-17mm in length and weigh approximately 1 to 2 grams. Black spots run up and down the legs of the frogs but when the frog feels threatened, red-backed poison frogs get its toxins from the ants that it eats.
