Henry Nantes Eighteenth Century London Merchant and Bankrupt
William Henry Nantes (Bremen, 1764 - Stonehouse, Devon, 1836) born Wilhelm Heinrich Nantes, was a London merchant, speculator, plantation owner and slave ship owner. He achieved notoriety in 1797 as a result of the scale of his bankruptcy, one of the largest to occur in the eighteenth century. His merchant house failed leaving debts of nearly half a million pounds. A full entry will be written soon. This is still work in progress. Sources are being compiled. Work in progress.
