John P. Fandel (September 9, 1925 to November 15, 2011)

  • In 1963, Manhattan College celebrated the centennial of its chartering by the State of New York. John Fandel wrote a poem, entitled, “A Chartering”, in which he captured the essence of a young school struggling with its future.
  • A collection of poems, "Bach and a Catbird" published by Roth Publishing in 1978 contains 50 poems, mostly short poems in formal meter and rhyme, although a few are in free verse.
  • His first collection was published in 1947
  • At age 85 was still writing and publishing. The back cover of this collection states, “John Fandel has published many poems (384) in a number of periodicals (90). In addition, he has brought out collections (4), chapbooks (8), privately printed pamphlets (16), and hand-made brochures (24). “ [4]

His work has been compared to that of the more famous Robert Frost (1874-1963).

In an essay in "Writers on Writing", specifically "Beginnings" starting on page 151, Paul Mariani, a 1962 Manhattan College graduate, gives credit to John Fandel. [8]

Open City #26, which includes writing by Mohammed Naseehu Ali, Brad Gooch, Kirsty Gunn, John Fandel and more, is very literary, and not Hollywood-y at all. [9]

John Fandel's parents, Leo and Lydia Fandel, called their 12 children together to pray the rosary around the dining room table in times of trouble. In 2009, en of the 12 siblings, now ranging in age from 72 to 89, gather every Sunday afternoon to pray the rosary for good health, the needs of the extended family and “in thanksgiving for our many blessings,” said Marcella Fandel Obery of Metamora. That family includes Alvena Force, 89; Melberta Krumholz, 87; Agnes Parr, 85; Dolores “Dee” Harms, 84; John “Jack” Fandel, 83; Marcella Obery, 79; Frederick Fandel, 78; Philip “Sixty” Fandel, 76; Donald “Doc” Fandel, 74; and Lulu Mae “Suzy” Hoffman, 72. One sister, Eileen Miller, and a brother, Austin “Squirt” Fandel, are deceased. November 29, 2009 [11]
