As mandated by the United States Parcel Service (USPS), the mailbox must be positioned between 41” to 45” from the road surface. Additionally, the mailbox must be 6” to 8” from the curb. When installing the post, use a 4” x 4” wooden support or a 2”-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe to safely secure the mailbox post into the ground. Do not place the mailbox more than 24” into the ground and do not use concrete to secure the post into the ground. In summary, the mailbox should be stable but have the ability to give way if hit by a car. On a more local scale, most neighborhoods in Chesterfield County have strict guidelines for the proper maintenance and repair of all mailboxes. These guidelines are frequently revised and are enforced by fines. In all of the communities, mailboxes and the mailbox posts should be kept in good visual condition. In River's bend, the mailbox should be painted with Duron mid-tone gray exterior formula B2Y4L36 which used to be available at the Duron paint store in the Bermuda Square Shopping Center in Chester. Since this store went out of business, another option for homeowners in this area is to get the color matched at Sherwin Williams in Colonial Heights. Another option for River's bend and other neighborhoods is to remove a 2’ x 2’ chip off your mailbox using a paint scrapper and hammer. Use wood filler to repair the area where the chip was removed. Then, take this wood chip to Sherwin Williams where the color can be matched. Also, all Chesterfield County mailboxes should display 4-inch black aluminum numbers of the same style as the original numbers. The numbers should be displayed on both sides of the mailbox and should always be clearly visible. If your numbers are still in decent condition, an option to keep them looking brand new is to remove them using a hammer and paint scraper. Then, paint the numbers with a black, semi-gloss spray paint. Furthermore, all plantings around the mailbox should be kept in a manicured states so as not to block the address numbers. The importance of having well-painted and visual numbers is two-fold. First, these numbers ensure that your mail is delivered on time and to the correct location. Second, these numbers allow the local law enforcement, fire department, and rescue squad to easily locate your house in case of an emergency. If new numbers or a new mailbox is needed, local hardware stores are an excellent source for these items. If you need mailbox repair assistance, RePost-It is a licensed independent contracting business operating out of Chester, Virginia that specializes in repairing and refinishing mailbox posts in Chesterfield County neighborhoods.
