I am Reed Brockman. I am a registered structural engineer, but also an active member of the national (US) K-12 STEM Education outreach community. I am not planning to write about myself or promote anybody for any financial gain on Wikipedia, but when I find an entity never before discussed on Wikipedia that is of significance in the non-profit/charitable/educational world, I want to write about it. As a little background, I was born in Boston in 1966 in Boston MA and grew up in Canton MA. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a civil engineering degree in 1988. While in college, I was also a camp counselor in the summer and assisted with a program working with children of single mothers that were temporarily living in the bottom floor of a church. I was also a late night DJ on WXPN.

After college, I came back to Boston and have been active in a number of charitable efforts over ever since, all while still working as a civil / structural engineer. I am presently the national technical lead for AECOM on the subject of tunnel inspections and also manage the more local bridge and tunnel inspection program in the northeast US. Many of the charitable efforts I have undertaken stem from my civil/structural engineering work. Since 2001, I have lead outreach efforts for the Boston Society of Civil Engineers section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES/ASCE, the oldest professional engineering society in the United States, founded in 1848). I have since 2007 run the BSCES Public Awareness and Outreach Committee and have held a number of other roles and served on many committees within the organization, including being the BSCES President. In that role, I have taken on many responsibilities: I have co-hosted the BNN-TV show "Civil Engineering Today" since 2006; I have served as a regional coordinator for the Future City Competition since 2011; I have served as coordinator or have assisted an annually selected coordinator of the BSCES Model Bridge Competition since 2002. I recently founded a new competition for high school students called Future Careers which is presently in a pilot stage. Future City and Future Careers are under the auspices of DiscoverE.

My involvement in BSCES led to my involvement in other organizations. I became the chair of the ASCE Committee on Volunteer Community Service and now serve on the ASCE Committee on Pre-College Outreach. Also, I became Youth Council Chair for the MassHire Metro North Workforce Board for MA, and I am on the board of World Unity Inc., an organization dedicated to recognizing and controlling internal biases.
