The Beautiful Monsters Tour was the double bill North American concert tour co-headlined by American rock bands Hole and Marilyn Manson. Launched in support of each band's respective third full-length studio LPs, 1998's Celebrity Skin and 1998's Mechanical Animals, the tour visited stadiums from February 28, 1999 through March 14, 1999. The name of the tour was titled by Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur due to the transformation in appearance and sound both bands undertook for both albums. It also alluded to the contrasting approach each band took in their respective transformation. The tour garnered a large amount of media attention and was billed by American cable channel MTV as a "potentially volatile mix" due to the public feud between both band's outspoken frontperson.
The joint tour was conceived by Hole's management, Q Prime, to the excited approval of the band. Hole singer Courtney Love teased the press that she aimed to launch a double bill with Canadian-American singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette. However, Hole's management aggressively pursued the band Marilyn Manson amid her and singer Marilyn Manson's quarrel stemming from her depiction in Manson's autobiography The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell. Both of them aired their objections in the press. Nevertheless, both groups agreed to tour together. The tour was planned to run from February 28, 1999 until April 27, 1999 with 37 shows confirmed. Both bands agreed on American stoner rock band Monster Magnet as the opening act from February 28, 1999 until April 04, 1999 thereafter the slot would be taken over by American indie pop band Imperial Teen until the end of the tour.
The tour was marred by an on and off stage squabble between Love and Manson, which led to the early withdrawal of Hole from the bill after only 9 dates. Hole's withdrawal put the future of the tour into question. However, Marilyn Manson continued the tour and renamed it the Rock Is Dead Tour in spite of the name being used by American rock bands Korn and Rob Zombie for their own joint US tour. Hole's departure also resulted in the expulsion of Imperial Teen from the bill in favor of Grammy-nominated American psychobilly band Nashville Pussy. Marilyn Manson released two recordings that documented portions of the tour: a live video album titled God Is in the T.V. and a live album titled The Last Tour on Earth. The live video album contain rare and unreleased footage including a behind-the-scenes backstage look at the tour while the live album contain audio recordings of select songs during the tour. It took 15 years before Love and Manson reconciled their differences. However, on December 2014, Love posted a picture on her Instagram account of her, Manson and Billy Corgan sitting together with a caption that read "all hatchets buried."
