ALEXANDER ANISIMOV, Bass
The Russian bass, Alexander Anisimov, a prize winner in the Glinka and Tchaikovsky Competitions, made his debut as a soloist with the Bolshoi Opera in 1990, the same year he completed his studies, singing major roles in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Glinka’s A Life for the Tzar. Two years later he made his international debut at the Paris Opera as the Old Convict in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in a production that also traveled to La Scala, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. He was invited to make his debut with La Scala, Milan as The Grand Inquisitore in a new production by Franco Zefferelli, of Verdi’s Don Carlo with Luciano Pavarotti, conducted by Riccardo Muti [EMI CD and video]. He also performed at La Scala as Commendatore at Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Muti. Anisimov sang Prince Gremin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Oneguin at the Chatelet Theater in Paris, conducted by Semyon Bychkov, which became an award-winning CD on the Philips label. His Metropolitan Opera debut took place in 1994, as the Old Convict in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk under the baton of James Conlon. A regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera, Anisimov appeared as Lodovico in the opening night production of Verdi’s Otello with Placido Domingo and Renee Fleming, conducted by James Levine, which was later telecast over PBS (Deutsche Grammophon CD/DVD).
His operatic engagements include Commendatore (Don Giovanni) in Frankfurt Opera, La Scala, Bavarian State Opera Inquisitore, Frate, (Don Carlo) in Palm Beach , Barcelona, La Scala, MET Sparafucile (Rigoletto)at the MET, Berlin State Opera, Vigevano festival, Canadian Opera Company, and Israel Philarmonic Orchestra Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra) with L'Opera de Nancy Zaccaria (Nabucco) and Il Padre Guardiano (La Forza del Destino) at New Jersey State Opera Banco (Macbeth) and Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Tenerife Ramfis (Aida) MET, The Aspen Festival, Dallas Opera , Liege Timur (Turandot) for the Metropolitan Opera, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, in Stadium in Paris, Munich and Gelsenkirschen. Oroveso (Norma) with The Canadian Opera Company, Sarastro (Zauberfloete) in Baltimore Basilio (Barbiere di Siviglia) in Bogota and Las Palmas King Dodon in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel at The Nice Opera and in Toulouse Lodovico (Otello) with Minnesota Orchestra and the MET Boris Godunov (Boris Godunov) with The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Opera Pimen(Boris Godunov) in Frankfurt Opera , in Toulouse and in Geneva King Rene (Iolanta) with Canadian Opera Company Gremin (Eugen Onegin )in Paris Chatelet, St. Gallen and the Seattle Opera Old Convict (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk) in Geneva, Koln, La Scala, MET, Paris Opera, Dresden Devil (Cherevichki - Tchaikovsky) in La Scala Old Cardinal (the world premier of Galilee, composer Michael Jarrell) in Geneva Konchak (Prince Igor); Ruslan (Ruslan and Ludmila); Mefistofele (Mefistofele); Father (Aleko); Demon (The Demon); Kochubey (Mazeppa); Silva (Ernani); Pistol (Falstaff); Prochida (I Vespri Siciliani) He also appeared in The Gambler at the MET, Attila in Florence, Tosca in Geneva, Ballo in Maschera in San Diego Opera, Madam Butterfly at The Bastille Opera.
Anisimov received "Performer of the season" award for the title role of Boros Godunov with the Seattle Opera, where he debuted in 2000.
Concert performances include Verdi’s Requiem with The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Connecticut Orchestra, Vlaamse Opera, Orquestra Sinfonica de Tenerife and The Madrid Philharmonic, Ivan el Terrible (Prokofiev) with Orquestra Sinfonica de Tenerife, Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass with The London Philharmonic Orchestra, The BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Davis, and along with scenes from Boris Godunov, at The Festival de Saint-Denis in Paris with Charles Dutoit and L'Orchestre National de France. He has sung in concerts with the Cliveland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi and BBC Proms with Mark Elder, in the Gala concerts in Montreal and Deutsche Oper Berlin AIDS Benefit Gala, in concerts of Shostakovich’s Symphony N13 (Baby Yar) with Bochumer Symphoniker as well as in recitals in Colmar and Rheingau Festivals, in Jahrhunderthalle, Frankfurt, in Alte Oper Frankfurt. Other concert performances include Oroveso in Bellini’s Norma at Carnegie Hall and gala concerts in Germany, Spain, Russia, Canada, United States, South Africa and Japan.
