About me

[edit]

Some of my hobbies include: Traveling, hiking, playing videogames, and spending time with friends. I am a very sports-minded person so I also love watching/playing sports. My two favorite sports are football and basketball. Sports can be one thing that brings people together. Many friendships can be created through just sports alone and can make two complete strangers connect very quickly just from watching a sports game.[1]

My wikipedia interests

[edit]

If I were to use wikipedia for the long term, I feel that I would use it for searching up famous people that I'm interested in learning about. Almost every famous person has some type of wikipedia page about them and it's interesting reading about their life stories. I would also use wikipedia for learning about certain events that have happened in the past. Certain articles give very complex details and it would help me get a better understanding of what happened during the event.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

I have been interested in sports for most of my life. I wanted to learn more about sports itself so I looked on the "sports" wikipedia page and found a link that led to spectator sports. I've never heard of that before so I visited the Spectator sport article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the lack of citations, its use of informal language, and its lack of completeness.

Citations

[edit]

I quickly noticed how there are no citations to any sources in this article. There are a good amount of links that lead to other wikipedia articles about different kinds of sports or sports incidents, but the facts written in this article are not cited to any sources. On the fifth paragraph for example, the article mentions how "The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) devotes much of their annual conference to research addressing the psychology behind a desire to view spectator sports, and how it might be leveraged to increase demand." However this piece of writing was not cited to a reliable source, or any source at all. The NASSM have their own website so this fact should have been cited for the reader to find out if it is trustworthy. But since there is no citation, there is no way for the reader to tell if this is a fact or not.

Informal language

[edit]

I noticed in the article that there were some slang terms written. The two terms were "armchair sports" and "lounge room sports" which to my understanding means people who broadcast a sport but do not know how to physically play the sport. I believe that it was a good idea for the author of this article to put these two terms in quotations, but it would also be helpful to indicate that they are slang terms; not everyone knows the slang in the sports world. Giving a more complex meaning to the two terms would be helpful as well.

Completeness

[edit]

This article is fairly short, and there are multiple things the author could've added to make it more complete. Some parts I see that are missing are the contents and sub-headings, which are very important for the reader because it helps them find a specific piece of information they want to find or read over again. Another issue I see in this article is toward the bottom of the page, where there is a heading titled "See also" which leads to only one link. I noticed the article that the one link leads to has interesting information on all the different spectator sports there are and its average attendance for the events, but I feel that there are more links that could be added under the heading. One thing the reader might be interested in is the famous broadcasters or broadcast shows. One broadcast show that is widely known in the basketball world is NBA on TNT, and one of the main broadcasters on the show is basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal. This is one of the many examples that could be added under the "See also" heading to make the article more complete.

Summary

[edit]

After reading the article to its entirety along with taking everything I wrote above in consideration, I wouldn't give this article a good rating. It is true that the article provides links to other articles on different sports and statistics, however there are no reference links at the bottom of the page for the reader to click on and learn more about the facts mentioned in the article, leaving the reader confused on what to believe. If the article included sub-headings to organize its information and added more links under the "See also" heading, it would make the article much stronger.
