  • For multiple periods (1839–1843, 1847–1849, 1861–1869, 1871–1873, and 1881–1883), the caucus leader is unknown. However, the vacancies in the 1860s are likely as a result of the American Civil War, during which most Democratic politicians sided with the Confederacy.
