South California is a proposal to create a new U.S. state by 13 counties seceding from the current state of California to create the new state of South California. On July 1st, 2011 Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone made a public statement that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should secede from California in order to form the new state of South California.
These counties combined represent a population of over 13,000,000 and over 73,000 square miles. This would make South California the 5th largest U.S. state by population and the 19th largest by size.
