Arming Sword

[edit]

An Arming Sword is a type of Medieval European sword with a single handed cruciform hilt and a straight, double edged blade usually of 27 to 32 inches. It was the standard sidearm of the Medieval knight from the 11th to 15th centuries.

Earlier types have near parallel blades with fullers and round points. Later types have acutely tapering blades with medial ridges. Carried in a scabbard hung from the belt. They would normally have been used with a shield or buckler.

War Sword

[edit]

A war sword is a type of Medieval European sword with a cruciform hilt and a straight double edged blade. With a longer hilt than the arming sword that allowed a double handed grip but still light enough to be used single handed. In use from the 13th to 14th centuries.

Great sword

[edit]

A Great sword is a type of European sword of the early Medieval period. Having a cruciform hilt with a double handed grip of around 17 to 23cm (6.5 to 9in). Blades are straight, double edged and from 86 to 115cm (34 to 45in) in length.

It was developed from the arming sword as a reaction to the increasing effectiveness of defensive body armour. The increase in blade length and use of both hands allowed blows to be delivered with greater force.

Longsword

[edit]

a Longsword is a type of European sword of the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. Having a cruciform hilt with a double handed grip with a straight, double edged blade and from 40 to 48in in length.

Also called a bastard sword from the early 15th century.
