[edit]The first half of the year encompasses departures for Emma Summerhayes (Anna Acton), Dexter Hartman (Khali Best), Peter Beale (Ben Hardy), Stan Carter (Timothy West) and Aleks Shirovs (Kristian Kiehling).[1][2][3][4][5] On 4 April 2015, it was announced that Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie would be leaving their roles as Kat and Alfie Moon temporarily in the second half of 2015 to film a spin-off series, in which they will migrate to Ireland in the "search for answers to some very big questions."[6] The couple made their final appearances on 22 May 2015.[7] Danielle Harold, James Forde and Mimi Keene, who play Lola Pearce, Liam Butcher and Cindy Williams respectively were written out of the show in Summer 2015; Harold made her final appearance on 28 July 2015, whilst Forde and Keene departed together the following month.[8][9] At the same time, Jake Wood announced that he would be taking a year long break from his role as Max Branning.[10] In June 2015, Lindsey Coulson quit her role as Carol Jackson and made her final appearance in Autumn.[11] Max left the series on 1 October, with Carol departing the following day. In July 2015, show bosses announced that Declan Bennett who plays Charlie Cotton had been written out of the show and would leave in early autumn,[12] and his exit aired on 24 September.[13] On 17 October 2015, it was announced that the show had chosen to write out Ricky Norwood from his role as Arthur "Fatboy" Chubb[14] and he left the square on 24 December 2015, before being killed off-screen on 26 December.[15] It was also confirmed on 20 December 2015 that Cora Cross, played by Ann Mitchell, had made a departure.[16]

William Mitchell, now played by Freddie Phillips, returned with Honey. On 24 December 2015, viewers saw Scott Maslen make a surprise, unannounced return as Jack Branning, following his exit in October 2013.[31] When Kat and Alfie returned for a guest stint during their break from the show, Tommy was recast from Ralfie White to Shay Crotty.[32]

January
[edit]The New Year focuses on the continuation of the "Who Killed Lucy Beale?" storyline before it reaches its end in February, following on from December in which former police officer Emma Summerhayes (Anna Acton) cracked the case.[39] On 20 December, it was revealed that there would be a "shock death" on New Year's Day.[40] This was later revealed to be Emma, who had suffered a concussion and a bleed to the brain after she had been hit by Roxy Mitchell's (Rita Simons) car.[1] Other storylines include the revelation that Kat Moon's (Jessie Wallace) deceased uncle Harry Slater (Michael Elphick), who had raped her when she was young, had left her money in the will,[41] and Linda Carter's (Kellie Bright) decision to report Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) for rape. The month also cumulated the reveal of Shabnam Masood's (Rakhee Thakrar) secret, in which she left her newborn on someone's doorstep after having a one night stand with Dean.[42]
EastEnders' 5000th episode aired on 19 January.[43]

February
[edit]EastEnders approached its 30th anniversary in February, with the "Who Killed Lucy Beale?" whodunnit also reaching its peak. The weeks leading up to the anniversary centre around Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) as she pieces together Emma Summerhayes' (Anna Acton) case file. She becomes wary of her surroundings when she realises she has found out what happened to Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater), and ends her relationship with Lucy's twin Peter Beale (Ben Hardy).[50] The week of the 30th anniversary is dubbed as "live week". Each episode included live "inserts" before broadcasting a full live episode on 20 February. Two episodes were broadcast on 19 February including an hour-long special earlier in the night, followed by the show's first flashback episode in which viewers would relive the hours leading up to Lucy's death. The special featured guest returns from Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater), Rainie Cross (Tanya Franks) and Jake Stone (Jamie Lomas).[51] Bobby Beale (Eliot Carrington) was revealed as Lucy's killer during the flashback episode, with Jane Beale (Laurie Brett) having moved her body to the common in order to protect him. The flashback episode was the highest rated EastEnders episode in 2015, with 11.6 million viewers.
The month also featured the demise of Nick Cotton (John Altman). The character died in the arms of his mother Dot Branning (June Brown) after he injected himself with impure heroin; Dot refused to call an ambulance after realising his true colours. Nick was found by Martin Fowler (James Bye), Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) and Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) on 19 February 2015, in a recreation of the show's first ever scene.
