Roc is a legendary bird of enormous size and strength—a monster with wings. Its Chinese equivalent, described in Zhuang Zi, is the titanic bird peng transformed from a gigantic fish kun that lived in the sea north of China; this bird resembles the great Taoist philosopher's ultimate dream of freedom.
"roc"/"ROC" is my long-standing pseudonym on Internet. When I was registering at Wikipedia in 2004, both spellings were taken, so I inserted two dots in "ROC", creating name "R.O.C". I later realized that this name can be confused with the abbreviation of the "Republic of China", but it was too late for me to change the username.
