about me

[edit]

I am a college student majoring in Nursing. Although I am not an artist, a lot of my time is spent painting when I am not drowning in homework. I enjoy using acrylic paint because of the texture it creates on my canvas. The pigment is what gives the paint its color.[1] There are two grades of acrylic paint: professional and student, each with its own advantages.[2] My favorite thing to paint is ocean animals. My weekends are spent in the woods of the PNW.. A lot of the time, my family and I hike with a toddler, a newborn and my best friend, a bulldog nicknamed Beefy. Our five year old dog goes everywhere with us. Being raised in Texas, I am definitely a person of heat. I like to be active in the sun or bundled up in several blankets with the heater blasting.

My Wikipedia interest

[edit]

As a volunteer of Wikipedia I hope to accomplish creating my own site for under-appreciated artist. I would also like to be a mentor for a new person starting out. As I learn more about how to navigate the site, I would like to import my knowledge as an author on sites I am passionate about. I hope to accomplish feeling more comfortable with Wikipedia and learning about other aspects of the site.

Article evaluation

[edit]

Within the last two years I  was able to witness two natural births. One at a birthing center and one at home. Ever since, I knew where my heart belonged. The feeling of extreme love and joy as a new life is brought into this world was unforgettable. I visited the birthing center article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects worth commenting on: the lack of citations, lack of information, and weak structure.

Lack of citations

[edit]

It isn't until the second paragraph that a citation is used. Because births outside of a hospital are  rare, I think reliable facts could prove to be a challenge to come by. The citations that are used, give the same general information. If I were to do my own research using the citations provided, I would have the same information from the majority of the sites. There is not much diversity within the sites the author decided to use. It feels the author did not really try to do deeper digging on the topic.

Lack of information

[edit]

There are only 2 main topics on this site, Comparison of traditional vs alternative and around the world. There are no topics relating to the origin, benefits, risk or how it has advanced today. The introduction paragraph simply talks about what it is and then jumps to examples. There is not any topics where I feel like I am learning about the birthing centers, just getting examples of them in different locations.

Weak structure
[edit]

The layout is weak compared to other Wikipedia essays. In the essay, it gives examples of 5 countries out of the 195 in the world. With that, the countries are not all together. It gives the United States and then goes to accreditation then back to examples of the countries. The contents provided are not needed and I feel like the author is skipping important information.

Conclusion
[edit]

Overall I would say this article feels incomplete. f I wanted to do extensive research on birthing centers I could not rely on this site to provide useful information. Overall I believe that this Wikipedia site provides a good, “what is it” but not enough to really understand. After reading the article,  I don't feel like I learned more than what I knew before going into the site.
