The 1990 FIFA Rimet Cup was the 5th edition of FIFA Rimet Cup, a quadrennial world championship for men's national football teams organized by FIFA, for the top teams in FIFA World Cup qualification that do not qualify for the FIFA World Cup. It took place in France from 6 May to 6 June 1990, after the country was awarded the hosting rights in 1989.
Qualification
[edit]Qualification for the FIFA World Cup doubled as qualification to the FIFA Rimet Cup. There were a total of 32 spots available in the tournament. Of these 32 spots, 12 went to UEFA, 6 went to AFC (including 1 for the host), 6 went to CAF, 4 went to CONCACAF, 3 went to CONMEBOL, and 1 went to OFC.
