The University of Notre Dame Public Art Collection, located in St. Joseph County, Notre Dame, Indiana, United States, consists of more than 100 works of sculpture located outdoors on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Founded in 1842 by Edward F. Sorin, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the university was officially chartered by the Indiana state legislature in 1844. Located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, a metropolitan area of some 300,000 residents, the University of Notre Dame is a Catholic research university with an enrollment of approximately 12,500 students (8,500 undergraduates). The main campus features 1,250 landscaped acres and is centerpieced by the Main Building’s “Golden Dome,” which is topped by a 17-foot tall statue of the Virgin Mary, titled “Our Lady.”

Other notable sculptures in the collection include Deborah Butterfield’s Tracery (2010), Richard Hunt’s Maquette for Wing Generator (1982/1984), Millard Sheets’ mural Word of Life (1964), and numerous works by David Hayes, Ivan Mestrovic, George Rickey, and Michael Todd. War Memorial Fountain, designed by John Burgee and Phillip Johnson, was dedicated in 1986.

Campus

[edit]

Public art is distributed throughout the University of Notre Dame campus, including statues commemorating religious and historical figures, and those dedicated to sports figures.[1] A collection of modern and contemporary art can be found in the Charles B. Hayes Family Sculpture Park.[2] During World War II, an ambitious campus beautification project generated the addition of many new sculpture installations on campus buildings.[3]

Archival photographs of the campus, including views of its public art, can be found in the University of Notre Dame Archives, located on campus in Hesburgh Library.
