About Me
[edit]I am a psychology major, sociology minor and leadership and behavior analysis concentration here at Drake University. I am a senior and plan on teaching abroad after I graduate. I work at an mental institution for children and at a childcare, I am interested in being a behavior analyst for an institution similar to the one that I am looking. For my article that I am considering contributing to Wikipedia, I am interested in the expression of sexuality in a social and political sense. I feel as though current youth are making so much progress with their progressive outlook on sexuality and the sexual community, with the perspective that we should all be free to express our sexuality, gender and sex in which ever way we choose. This is something that has been occurring slowly for a while, but this last generation seems to be making quite a bit of progress in changing the sexual and gender-free community. I have previously taught sex education courses and have worked closely will staff at Drake University promoting gender equality. This topic has always interested me, mostly because I like the expression of sexuality it encourages other people to experience an emotional upheaval and educates others about the possibility of sexual expression.
Suggestions on specific topic are welcomed!
Articles
[edit]ARTICLE #1: An article that I just found needs a lot of work, and is in my range of interests. The article [1] focuses on those in the LGBT community around the world, and the different countries tolerance of the homosexual community.
ARTICLE #2: This article doesn't really go along with my sexual expression topic, however I noticed that it needed a lot of work and that this is something that I know a lot about. I've worked in a few different [2] and know quite a bit of information about their methods, and the controversy that goes along with these kind of facilities.
ARTICLE #3: While listening to my fellow classmates, I was observing conversation between those who had similar topics to me. One of the people in my course are looking at transgender in China, and used the phrase sexual minority. While looking up the article titled [3] I realized that this article only consists of one paragraph so that might be an article to add to.
ARTICLE #4: suggestion from a staff member is to look at the article for disability rights for the potential "youth and disability page" [4]
Article Proposal/Subject Change Proposal
[edit]I am considering entirely switching my position on the research that I am doing and working with mentally disabled youth. Looking on Wikipedia there is no page called disabled youth, and most results that were reached were different programs or camps for children with special needs when in reality there is an entire culture that surrounds these youth. So I am considering taking it upon myself to write an article about the culture surrounding disabled youth. These sections are only potential, suggestions to more or less sections are welcome.
I would start with an introduction. Who does mentally disabled youth consist of? Where are they located? This would be a very generalized description of children with special needs, and who specifically the article is focusing on. I would like to mostly look at mentally ill youth, as opposed to encompassing all disabilities such as physically handicapped youth as well. The location would mostly focus on the biggest areas around the world that have (diagnosed) mentally disabled youth, just a brief statement so that the reader knows where the majority of the youth mentioned in the article are located.
The next section would consist of special education, and the tiers/levels of special education the correlate with the intensity of the mental-illness related behavior. This section would explain that not all mentally ill youth require special education or have access, but if they do attend or acquire extra help this is what it would look like. I could discuss the different theories of special education, what areas are performing particularly well in consideration to improving special education, etc.
The next section would be about employment and unemployment rates in consideration to mentally ill youth. The rates of unemployed youth compared to the rates of unemployed mentally disabled youth or what percentage of unemployed youth includes those with mental disabilities. How the job market is limited for those with special needs, and what are some services that mentally disabled youth can go to help them find jobs.
The next section would be about violence and crime among those with special needs. Lots of youth who are living with special needs participate in crime of all intensities, either due to their lack of understanding of the law or their attempt to deal with the difficulties of living with a mental illness. The rate of crime among those with special needs are high, especially among the youth.
The next section would be about poverty among homeless youth. Correlating with violence and crime, many of those with special needs are living in poverty. As the previous section about unemployment among those with special needs, many of these youth are unable to get jobs due to the intellectual requirements needed for said jobs which results in homelessness (which correlates with crime). Many of the homeless are disabled, so this section would show a comparison of the homeless population and how many of those are in the youth category.
The next section would be an explanation about mental health facilities, or residential treatment centers for youth with special needs (a place in which I have previously worked as a counselor). I would briefly discuss the options for living facilities, and how many of disabled youth is located in the living facilities as opposed to at home/on the streets. I would discuss the requirements of what a disabled youth needs to do to live in one of these facilities.
