Bowen van Straubenzee

Colonel Bowen van Straubenzee (1829-1899)was a British-born Army officer. During his service in [Canada],he took part in the suppression of the [Riel Rebellion] against [Meti] separatists and, in particular, he played a decisive role in the Battle of [Batoche].

Family Bowen van Straubenzee was a member of the prominent family of [Spennithorne] in the former [North Riding]of Yorkshire (now [North Yorkshire]). The family, of [Dutch] extraction, settled in [England] and rose to prominence during the [Victorian] era. Many members of the family joined the [British Army] and served throughout the [British Empire], from [Canada], to West and East [Africa], Ceylon (now [Sri Lanka]) and India, and in the [Far East]. Several, including Bowen's own son, received [knighthood]s. The family is now probably best known as being part of the 'inner circle' of associates of the [British] [Royal] family, with the younger members being among the closest friends of the younger [prince]s in the direct line of succession.
