Chrishantha Abeysena is a Senior Professor in Community Medicine in the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka[1]. He has also served as the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine (PGIIM)[2] and the Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo.[3] Prof. Abeysena has contributed significantly to the medical field in Sri Lanka through his work in public health, research, and education.

Early Life and Education

Prof. Abeysena received his primary and secondary education at De Mazenod College. He pursued his medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, where he obtained his MBBS. During his time as a medical student, he was active in student politics and served as Treasurer, Secretary, and President of the Medical Students Welfare Society. He played a key role in nationalizing the North Colombo Medical College, leading the Medical Faculty Action Committee from 1984 to 1987.

Prof. Abeysena further pursued postgraduate qualifications, earning an MA in Buddhist Studies from the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies[4] in 1994, an MSc in Community Medicine from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine[5] in 1995, and an MA in International Relations from the University of Colombo in 1998. Additionally, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics from the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in 2000, and an MD in Community Medicine from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine[5], University of Colombo in 2002. He completed his post-MD training at Monash University, Australia[6], specializing in Health Service Management, Clinical Epidemiology, and Biostatistics.

Academic Career

Prof. Abeysena joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya in 1997 and became a Senior Professor[1] in Community Medicine in 2018. Throughout his academic career, he has been involved in various committees at the University of Kelaniya and the University Grants Commission,[7] contributing to the advancement of medical education and research in Sri Lanka. He has served on the Ethics Review Committees of multiple universities and has held leadership positions[8][9] in academic bodies, such as the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka, where he served as President in 2016/2017.

Prof. Abeysena has received several awards for his research contributions, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Award [10]for Best Researcher and the President's Award for Scientific Publications[11].

Research and Publications

Prof. Abeysena’s research interests focus on health systems, particularly in quality improvement, non-communicable diseases, communicable diseases, and interventional studies. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, contributing[1] to the body of knowledge in public health and medicine in Sri Lanka and beyond.

Other Roles

Prof. Abeysena has been instrumental in promoting evidence-based medicine in Sri Lanka. He was a founding member of the South Asian Cochrane Network[6] and has been involved in several national and international health initiatives.

In addition, he has contributed to policy development for the National Peoples Power (NPP)[24] and has been active in the National Intellectuals Organization[25] (NIO).
