User:Proabivouac/Ethics for dummies

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the wake of the Essjay scandal and several other incidents, I am composing a list of obvious ethical no-nos which might save us a lot of trouble in the future if they're adopted as policy. You're encouraged to edit this page (although as it's my user space, I reserve the right to change it) or post on the associated talk page:

Basic Wikipedia ethics

[edit]

Some basic Wikipedia ethics:

  • Don't claim academic or professional credentials you don't really have.
  • Don't impersonate anyone else.
  • Don't lie to the press or to the public.
  • Don't say you represent Wikipedia or the Wikimedia foundation, unless you really do.
  • Don't threaten anyone off of Wikipedia for anything done on Wikipedia. If a situation arises where this seems necessary, contact the office.
  • If you do any of these things, you will face the loss of administrative responsibilities and/or be banned. So, don't do them.
