1913 Royal Tour of Lancashire

The 1913 Royal Tour of Lancashire was an 8 day tour of the county of Lancashire by King George V and Queen Mary. The Royal couple travelled 220 miles and visited 36 towns and cities in 8 days between 7 July 1913 and 14 July 1913. The tour started in Warrington and ended in Manchester and Salford. Most of the visit was conducted by motor car, the Royal party driving from place to place, stopping at Town Halls and Market Squares. It also included official state visits to Liverpool and Manchester with grand processions using the state carriages.

Background to the visit

Following their coronation in 1911 King George and Queen Mary embarked on a number of organised tours and visits including India in 1911-12. The main purpose of the visit to Lancashire was for King and Queen to see the chief manufacturing district in their kingdom. The tour followed shorter visits to mining districts of South Wales and West Riding in 1912 and the Staffordshire Potteries in spring 1913. The visit was hosted and organised by Edward Stanley, the 17th Earl of Derby who accompanied the King and Queen throughout their visit. The royal party stayed at Knowsley Hall where they were entertained by the Earl of Derby with grand dinners and and evening of music hall entertainment.

7 July 1913 Warrington and Widnes On the 7th July 1913 on the first day of the tour in Warrington the King and Queen visited J. Crosfield and Sons soap works founded by Joseph Crosfield and visited the Town Hall where they officially opened a new bridge.

8 July 1913 St Helens, Ormskirk, Southport, Preston, Lytham, St Annes, Blackpool On the morning of the 7th July 1913, the second day of the tour of Lancashire, the King and Queen visited Pilkington & Sons glassworks in St Helens where they were shown all the processes involved in making plate glass. The King and Queen passed through the works on a moving trolley. In the afternoon they visited Preston Town Hall and had lunch at the Bull and Royal Hotel before visiting Horrockses Yard Work.
