Five9, Inc. is a company that makes virtual call center software[1] which is used by sales and marketing, customer service and support, finance and collections and other organizations for both inbound and outbound call center functions such as telemarketing, telesales and support centers.


History

Five9, Inc. (NASDAQ: FIVN) was founded [2] by John Sung Kim, Gus Laredo, James Southworth and Ray Soto who sought to combine Voice-over-IP technology with an emerging Software-as-a-Service delivery model in March of 2001. John Sung Kim started the company [3] as a softswitch startup at a time when the CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) market was in decline following the burst of the dot-com bubble. After several iterations John Sung Kim and lead engineer Andrew Veliath brainstormed the concept of the first Virtual Call Center as a Service model, which put them in direct competition with much larger vendors such as Avaya and Nortel. In early 2008, the company reported revenue growth of 1,300 percent[4] from 2003 to 2006, and is reportedly doing over $70 million in annual revenues as of end of 2012.

Five9's headquarters is in San Ramon, California and they maintain a development office staffed with engineers in Nizhniy Novgorod Russia.

Funding

Venture Capital firm Hummer Winblad [5] is a significant investor in the firm, along with Partech International and Mosaic Venture Partners.[6] To date, the firm has raised $89 million in venture capital financing and is now publicly traded on the NASDAQ marketplace under the ticker symbol: FIVN.

Claims to Fame

The company claims to have pioneered the hosted call center industry. In October of 2009, the company announced[7] a cloud computing platform for call centers which they claim is an industry-first.
