Biography

Pierre Corvol was a student at the Lycée Condorcet. He is a former intern at the Paris hospitals (1964) and a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA, in 1969. He became an associate professor at the CHU Broussais Hôtel-Dieu in 1976. In 1983, he took over the management of Inserm's U36 (Vascular Pathology and Renal Endocrinology) and was elected to the chair of experimental medicine at the Collège de France in 1989, a position he held until 2012.

Pierre Corvol chaired the Scientific Council of the Foundation for Medical Research (1995-1998), the Scientific Council of Inserm (1999-2003), the Board of Directors of the École normale supérieure (2001-2004), the Scientific Council of the Assistance public-Hôpitaux de Paris (2004-2006). He was a member of Inserm's Scientific Steering Committee from 1985 to 1992 and played a major role in the creation of Clinical Investigation Centres (1990-1992), which allow clinical research in hospitals 2.

Pierre Corvol has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences since 1995. He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000. Since 9 December 2008, he has been a full member of the National Academy of Medicine 1. He is an honorary doctorate from the Universities of Lausanne (1997), Geneva (2006) and Semmelweis University of Budapest (2012).

In 2016, he was commissioned by Thierry Mandon to submit a report on scientific integrity 3,4,5, following which numerous measures were taken for scientific integrity in France, including the creation in 2017 of the French Office for Scientific Integrity 6,7. Pierre Corvol is a leading researcher in the field of endocrine regulation of blood pressure and hypertension. In particular, he was one of the discoverers[necessary referent] of the hormone regulatory system, the renin angiotensin system, and the angiotensin converting enzyme 8.

His work has contributed very largely 9 to the development of therapeutics blocking the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the importance of which he has shown 10. These drugs are widely used 11 in the treatment of high blood pressure, heart failure and kidney failure in diabetics.

He was one of the pioneers Insufficient Source 12 of the genetics of high blood pressure in humans. He has shown the importance of genetic markers in the renin system for predisposition to hypertension, cardiovascular disease and renal complications in diabetics 13.
