1 . Biography

Born in Leghorn (24.1.1950) under the Aquarius.

Education

Venice (1955-6) and Leghorn (1956-63) Grade and Secondary School, Niccolini-Guerrazzi Leghorn (1963-6) and T Mamiani Rome (1966-8) Classic High School, Rome University (Medicine 1968-9, Architecture, 1969-72), Iuav Venice Architecture Institute University (1972-4).

Architecture Degree, under prof arch M Tafuri, at full votes (110/110 Cum Laude) and academic publication wish, on T van Doesburg and De Stijl (10.10.1974).

Teaching, and Research

History Of Architecture Researcher, Grant-Holder (1.11.1974) and then Tenure, and Assistant Professor (1974-88) to F Dal Co and to M Scolari.

History of Contemporary Architecture Associate Professor (1988–2000).

He has regularly lectured and held workshops, in Italy and abroad, for professional bodies, museums (as the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, for the dutch edition of his book HP Berlage Complete Works, or the Nai in Rotterdam, for an International Conference on Architectural Magazines, as representative of “Casabella”), schools and universities; he has been official speaker at the ATypI Rome (Italian panel2 day organizer) and TypoBerlin (on Escher, Lauweriks and the Dutch Tradition, showing the MCE fonts designed by his son Cesare) international conferences on type design.

He has organized international conferences, and lectures programs, on architecture and design, ia, with speakers as M Ridolfi A Rossi G Aulenti E Sottsass A Branzi J Hochuli E Spiekermann M Carter S Stone A Acerbi.

He has interviewed, with F Dal Co, A Speer on Nazi architecture and art (1977).

He has recovered, restored and published in a cd-audio, attached to “Casabella” (2002), the C Scarpa’s Magistral Lesson for the Iuav Academic Year 1962-3 Opening.

From 1975, he has worked at the ideation, management and production of exhibitions on art, architecture and design.

He speaks fluently english and french, with good knowledge of spanish, german and dutch, and notions of some european/eastern languages.

His first show on Light Design, the Lampade Povere collection (12 prototypes, 60 copies), was held at Verona 2000 Art Gallery (1976), and reported by “l’Espresso” Italian Magazine.

He has collaborated with A Novarese, main XX Century Italian Type Designer, and developed for him the Regista font, for the Morisawa international competition on type design (with M Scibilia).

With his son Cesare (Venice 1982), he has designed fonts: ia, the MCE appreciated by M Carter and E Spiekermann, and on their suggestion first showed at the 1998 TypoBerlin conference.

He has designed many magazines and book series, for Italian publishers (as Alinea, Arsenale, Electa, Laterza, Officina, ia), corporate images and public identities, web sites (including 2 live prototypes for “Casabella” magazine, 1 portal, and 1 blog) and blogs – his blog had 200.000 contacts since January 2007.

He has been University Iuav of Venice Communication & Visual Corporate Designer (1998-2002), after M Vignelli e M Scolari, redesigning identification systems, all printed matter, signage, forms, and stationery, magazines, book series, furniture and exhibitions – the same for the Udine, the Ferrara and the Padua Universities.

He has organized the Iuav New Logo International Competition (on invitation: P Apeloig winner, N Brody / Research Studios, M Carter, G Dumbar / Studio Dumbar, Mevis & Van Deursen, P Scher / Pentagram, M Vignelli).
