Adding references

[edit]

As of November 2024, I'm in the process of adding lots of references to wikipedia. I'm working on the following basis:
- Better to have a reference to support a statement than no reference at all.
- A reference should be fairly clear and obvious. Just telling somebody to visit the homepage of a website and then go look for information on a page hidden away on the website is not my first choice solution.
- Independent references from unrelated parties are better and more reliable than from the parties involved. If there is a page about Mickey Mouse, then any sources quoted on the Mickey Mouse page on wikipedia should ideally have been written by somebody other than Mickey Mouse. See Wikipedia:Independent sources
- If there is a good reference in place, I will tend not to replace it unless I have a significantly better source. I do not want to destroy the existing diversity of sources. If the only source on the wikipedia page is non-independent and I have an independent source, I will add (but not replace) the independent source.
- If you think you are able to add references yourself, please do so. Wikipedia is a team effort.
- I am a human being. I do not work on wikipedia 24/7. I also make occasional mistakes. If you see a mistake I made, please either correct it if you can, or tell me about it.
