Mount Blackwelder was mapped between 1947 and 1959 using surveys from the United States Geological Survey and aerial photographs from the U.S. Navy. It was named in 1984 by the U.S. Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Lieutenant Commander Billy G. Blackwelder, a senior Navy helicopter pilot who served in Antarctic Development Squadron Six from 1971 to 1972 and from 1975 to 1977.
