The Department of Prosthodontics is an advanced training department of the College of Dentistry at the University of Tennessee. The program provides advanced instruction and training in the specialized area of prosthodontics, allowing for private and academic practice.

History

[edit]

The University of Tennessee College of Dentistry was founded in 1878 in Knoxville, Tennessee, making it the oldest dental college in the South and the third oldest public college of dentistry in the United States[1]. In 1911, The University of Tennessee moved its dentistry college to Memphis, Tennessee, to provide a larger facility for research and studies. The original building was located on Monroe Avenue in Memphis, until 1978 when it moved to its current location on Union Avenue to the Dunn Building. This building received its name after former Tennessee Governor Winfield C. Dunn (1971-1975), who was a graduate of the UT College of Dentistry (D.D.S.) in 1955.

In the early 1970s, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) sponsored the first formal program in postdoctoral prosthodontic training. This training became known as the Advanced Prosthodontics Program. It was shared between the two facilities, until November 2007, then moved to the Department of Prosthodontics at the UTHSC College of Dentistry.

Postgraduate Training

[edit]

The Department of Prosthodontics offers advanced training and studies in basic sciences relevant to prosthodontics. Clinical applications are emphasized while maintaining academic and research activities throughout the study. In-depth instruction and patient treatment, involving dental implant therapy, is an integral component of didactic and clinical activities. Prosthodontic residents are encouraged to both surgically place and restore dental implants. Instruction in laboratory technology is an essential part of all treatment rendered. Review of current and classic literature related to prosthodontics is accomplished regularly. Interdisciplinary seminars emphasize the importance of comprehensive dental care in the treatment of complicated oral conditions. Additionally, case presentation seminars are conducted on a regular basis.

All residents engage in research and scientific studies based on requirements by the American Dental Association in the Accreditation Standards for Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Prosthodontics.[2] Resources and mentorship are provided by the Department of Prosthodontics' clinical research facility, the College of Dentistry’s dental research center and dental materials core facilities, the University’s Biomedical Engineering & Imaging program, the University’s Center for Cancer Research, and the University of Memphis Bioengineering program.

The 36-month program's[3] successful completion requires residents to demonstrate proficiency in the examination, diagnosis, and reconstruction of complex edentulous, partially edentulous, and dentate oral conditions. Upon completion, a Certificate in Prosthodontics is awarded by the UTHSC College of Dentistry, and a Master of Dental Science degree is granted by the UTHSC College of Graduate Health Sciences.
