Nació en Madrid el 19 de abril de 1832.^{1 nota 1} Su padre, médico y profesor de instituto, era de Aragón y su madre de Navarra. Pasó su infancia en Murcia, donde realizó los estudios correspondientes a la enseñanza primaria. Fue allí, en el Instituto de Murcia, donde comenzó su afición por las matemáticas.

Con el objeto de preparar el ingreso a la Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, se trasladó con catorce años a Madrid,² donde ingresó en el recién creado Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza San Isidro. Cumplidos los veinte, salió de la Escuela de Madrid con el título de Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, que había obtenido con el número uno de su promoción, y se tuvo que desplazar a Almería y Granada para incorporarse a su primer trabajo.

En su juventud leía a Goethe, Homero y Balzac, lecturas que alternaba con las de matemáticos como Gauss, Legendre y Lagrange.

José Echegaray mantuvo una gran actividad hasta su muerte, ocurrida el 14 de septiembre de 1916 en Madrid.^{1 3 nota 2} Su extensa obra no dejó de crecer en la vejez: en la etapa final de su vida escribió 25 o 30 tomos de Física matemática. Con 83 años comentaba:

He was born in Madrid on April 19^th, 1832. His father, a doctor and institute professor, was from Aragon and his mother was from Navarra. He spent his childhood in Murcia, where he finished his elementary education. It was there, at the Murcia Institute, where he began his math hobby.

With the goal to earn enough money for the Engineering School of Channels and Ports, he moved at the age of fourteen to Madrid, where he enrolled at the newly created Second Teaching Institute of San Isidro.
