1. Winners of PGA Championship or U.S. Open prior to 1970 or in the last 10 calendar years (Beginning in 1998, this is a five-year exemption.)

Irwin and Kite mostly retired from the PGA Tour after turning 50 in 1995 and 1999, respectively. Grady dropped to past champion status for good in 2001; Irwin moved to cat 19.

Woods won both tournaments in 2000, but his exemption was not lengthened.

2. Winners of the THE PLAYERS Championship in the last 10 calendar years. (Beginning In 1998, this is a five-year exemption.)

Jodie Mudd retired in 1996 but was listed in the media guide.

Hal Sutton moved from cat 6 with his win, and received an exemption through 2005.

3. Winners of the Masters Tournament in the last 10 calendar years. (Beginning in 1998, this is a five-year exemption.)

Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam declined membership.

Vijay Singh won the Masters and received an exemption through 2005, but would stay in in cat 1 until 2004.

4. Winners of the British Open in the last 10 calendar years (1990-present). (Beginning In 1998, this is a five-year exemption.)
5. Winners of the NEC World Series of Golf in the last 10 calendar years. (Beginning in 1998, this is a three-year exemption.)

José María Olazábal declined membership.

Ian Baker-Finch essentially retired in 1997.

7. Winners of World Golf Championship events, beginning in 1999 (a three-year exemption)

Mike Weir moved from cat 9 and received an exemption through 2003.

Twelve players moved into this category during the season. Robert Allenby, Notah Begay III, and Jesper Parnevik earned exemptions through 2003 with multiple wins.

Bradley and Dodds finished outside the top 150 and fell to past champion status (Dodds fell short at Q School). Simpson received a medical extension. Watson moved to cat 19.

Sindelar, Forsman, Wentworth, Watts, Reid, Barlow, Cheesman, and Haas finished in the 126–150 range. Barlow was successful in Q School, while the rest fell to the conditional category for 2001.

Gump, Tolles, Delsing, Maginnes, Uresti, Pride, Fabel, Brisky, Frost, Henke, Raulerson, Booker, Black, and Brown finished outside the top 150. Frost used a top 50 career money exemption for 2001; Brown received a medical extension. Tolles and Pride were successful in Q School. Gump, Delsing, Fabel, Henke, and Black fell to past champion status; only Delsing would ever have better status again. Maginnes, Uresti, Brisky, Raulerson, and Booker became non-members; only Maginnes and Uresti would reach the PGA Tour again.

23. Major Medical Extension

Christie failed to meet his terms in July and became a non-member, never regaining status. Fiori was granted a carry-over for 2001.

Emlyn Aubrey was promoted to this category in May after meeting the terms of his medical extension, but ultimately finished outside the top 150 of the money list, fell short at Q School and became a non-member in 2001, and never reached the PGA Tour again.

Those who finished in the 126–150 range were Spence, Murphy, Fehr, Choi, Perks, Beckman, Stockton, and Bates. Of these, Murphy, Choi, Perks, and Beckman were all successful in Q School. Spence, Fehr, Stockton, and Bates had to settle for conditional status.

Morland, Friend, Springer, Rollins, Gotsche, Buha, Gove, Martin, Curry, Heintz, Cochran, Hart, Gibson, Howison, Caron, Bryant, Bengoechea, Nolan, Dawson, David Edwards, Bowden, Restino, Wetterich, and Brehaut finished outside the top 150. Morland and Bryant were successful in Q School. Dawson, Wetterich, and Brehaut received major medical extensions, and Bowden and Restino minors. Springer, Gibson, and David Edwards settled for past champion status (for good). The other 15 became non-members; Friend, Gotsche, Martin, Curry, Cochran, Hart, Howison, Bengoechea, and Nolan would not reach the PGA Tour again.

Reshuffle medical

Schwarzrock remained on a medical for the entire season. A carry-over was unnecessary, as he made it through Q School.

28. Minor Medical Extension

Aubrey met the terms of his extension in May and was promoted to the major medical category, but ultimately finished outside the top 150 of the money list, fell short at Q School and became a non-member in 2001, and never reached the PGA Tour again. Briggs earned enough to retain conditional status; thus he fell to category 30 in June, then finished outside the top 150 of the money list, fell short at Q School, and became a non-member in 2001.

29. 126–150 from money list

Waite finished inside the top 125. Quigley finished in the 126–150 range and, unsuccessful at Q School, remained in the conditional category yet again for 2001.

The remaining players all finished outside the top 150. Sposa and Nobilo were successful at Q School; Gallagher finished in the top 15 of the Buy.com Tour money list. Tataurangi received a medical extension. Hulbert and Blackmar fell to past champion status in 2001 (for good). Horgan and Moss became non-members; neither would reach the PGA Tour again.

30. Non-exempt medical extension

Danny Briggs fell to this category after his minor medical expired; he finished outside the top 150 of the money list, fell short at Q School, and became a non-member in 2001.

Notable past champions

The following past champions finished in the top 200 of the money list:

McGovern and Gamez finished in the 126–150 range and earned conditional status for 2001. The rest remained in the past champion category; only Zokol and Hammond would earn better status in the future.

Two other past champions, Keith Clearwater and Fred Wadsworth, earned 2001 cards in Q School.

Notable non-members

The following non-members finished the equivalent of top 200 on the money list, including earnings in WGCs (^ denotes those eligible for full PGA Tour membership in 2001):

Clarke did not take up membership mid-season. Jiménez, Olazábal, and Langer accepted membership for 2001, while Clarke, Bjørn, Westwood, Montgomerie, Price, Harrington, and Ian Woosnam declined. Hosokawa accepted STM in June, Jiménez in July, Howell in August

None of those listed here made it through Q School; only Howell and Sear competed.

Other notes

Twenty-three players not listed made it from the Buy.com Tour to the PGA Tour for 2001 (14 via the money list, 9 via Q School). Thirteen players with no PGA Tour or Buy.com Tour status in 2000 made it through Q School (including European Tour players Stephen Allan, Emanuele Canonica, Per-Ulrik Johansson, and Geoff Ogilvy and Japan Golf Tour player Kaname Yokoo).
