Peter Love, known as "The Smooth Entertainer," is a renown international recording artist, singer/songwriter, entertainer, music producer and inventor. Peter was born to medical professionals, Dr. Ben and Ann Love, Jr., in Boston, MA, at Boston Lying-In Hospital where his father was on staff. Peter was the middle child of three boys. His father was a Bacteriologist and his mother was a RN (Registered Nurse0. Dr. Love graduated from Harvard Medical School in Boston. His mother received her nursing degree from MeHarry Medical College in Nashville, TN.

While Dr. Love was on staff at Boston Lying-In Hospital in Boston, MA, where Peter was born, at the age of 6 months, he contracted the fatal disease Meningitis when there was no cure. Dr. Love, being a Bacteriologist, gathered several colleagues to help develop an antibiotic with the hope of curing Peter. They created the antibiotic, still popular today, Tetracycline. His father took Peter home and began administering their new antibiotic. After a long and arduous battle to cure Peter, he was eventually healed. Fate was on his side. Tragically, Dr. Love passed away when Peter was 3y/o. As a result, Mrs. Love returned to Nashville, TN., to resume her nursing profession.

In the 50's. African Americans had few choices to get their medical degree. MeHarry Medical College and Fisk University, both in Nashville, TN, were institutions that ignored segregation. That is where many African Americans earned their medical education and degrees. Mrs. Love, a pianist, made it mandatory that Peter and his two brothers, Kim, a year older, and Brett, two years younger, include music as part of their education. Peter chose the drums. he wanted a drum set. His mother wanted to make certain that he truly wanted to play drums. Rather than fork out money for a brand new drum set, she stated that she would buy him drum pads first and if he stuck with that along with lessons, she would then buy him the drum set he pleaded for. Peter's drumming lasted about 6 months. He never got the drum set.

One of Peter's baby-sitters played the trumpet. Peter was drawn to it and asked for a trumpet. He received one and excelled on it. He received lessons from several teachers including his grammar school band leader. Peter became part of his grammar school's marching band - Wharton School in Nashville, TN. Peter played the trumpet and loved it. His brothers Kim and Brett played the saxophone and clarinet, respectively. They began playing together locally and in the marching band.

Mrs. Love met Edward Page-El, while he was in school studying to be a Pediatric Neurologist. When he became a full fledged MD, they married when Peter was 6 y/o. Peter and his brothers would play at various venues. When Peter was 10 y/o, his stepfather was offered a position in Chicago at St. Lukes Presbyterian hospital. The family relocated there. Their mother learned of John Houser, a very accomplished musician, instructor, and band leader. Mr. Houser was one of the 1st African American band leaders of Chicago's prestigious Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Houser was a very strict music instructor and insisted on nothing but the best from his students. Well, eventually Peter's brothers dropped out, but Peter stuck with it and became a very accomplished trumpet. player.

When Peter entered the 8th grade at Chicago's Stephen A. Douglas pubic school, He began playing the trumpet in the school's band. He also joined the school's rifle drill team led by Mr. Boyd. That required a lot of footwork and body coordination. Peter was a natural dancer and had no problem adapting. He loved it! His Peter would sing, but never took it serious. One day while singing at school in the hallway, one of his classmates heard him. He loved what he heard. He was already aware of Peter's showmanship from the drill team. He approached Peter and asked would he like to join an a cappella group he and a couple of other friends were forming. He did and they formed the group - The Shantels.

The Shantels, 8th graders consisting of four boys, began singing at their school and locally. Everyday during lunch period, they would go over to the apartment where Peter's family lived and rehearse. This lead to singing around the neighborhood and at local events drawing a following. The Shantels began winning local contests. The Shantels, like many groups at the time, patterned themselves after groups like the Temptations and the Four Tops.

The Shantels parted ways when they graduated from 8th grade and went to separate high schools . Peter went to a James Brown contest and was blown away by the James Brown show. James Brown was a showman and that was in Peter as well. He patterned himself after J.B. He couldn't sing like J.B. but could imitate his dance moves. In High School is where Peter picked back up his trumpet and had four years of singing and playing his trumpet along with performing out front as a showman blowing audiences away - getting rave reviews from classmates and audiences alike.
