Whistleblower Dr David Drew refuses to take the hush money

Dear Sir Robert Francis, your report on NHS whistleblowers is not enough – we need action on how these brave professionals can be helped

Dr David Drew was a Consultant Paediatrician at Walsall Manor Hospital until his dismissal in December 2010 for “gross misconduct and insubordination.”

The trust was the defendant in the legal case of Drew v Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust [2013] UKEAT 0378_12_2009 (20 September 2013). Dr Drew, a paediatric consultant, claimed that he was unfairly dismissed. The Trust has told him that he "should refrain from any religious references in his professional communications". He refused to accept this instruction and was dismissed. He claimed that he had been discriminated against on religious grounds. The Employment Tribunal and the Employment Appeal Tribunal dismissed his claim.[1][2] His employer argued that he had failed to accept recommendations made following an independent review sparked by him lodging a grievance against a colleague.

In 2014 he released a book called Little Tales of Life and Death, an autobiography. In it he describes administrators and managers as bureaucrats who have to be outwitted.[3] He also describes the death of a young patient, Kyle Keen, at the hands of his step-father, and the blame he ascribes to one of his consultant colleagues, which appears to have altered his relationships with the trust.[4] He was, he explains "for many years the only white and only Christian consultant in the paediatric department at Walsall."

One of the recommendations made by Nadeem Moghal, the Chair of RCPCH Independent Review of Paediatrics in 2010 was that "Dr Drew should accept that his own wider personal views and religious beliefs should be kept to himself and should not be imposed on others." Drew accepts that he had sent consultant colleagues an email containing the prayer of St Ignatius: Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do your will. but he denied being a religious bigot.[5]
